This is a brutal bye week for quarterbacks, because a lot of fantasy relevant names get some rest this week. Signal callers like Kirk Cousins, Brock Osweiler, Carson Palmer, Jay Cutler, Andy Dalton and most notably, Tom Brady, all get to rest in Week 9. However, there are plenty of good options out there and plenty have solid streaming potential. Of the five guys on this list, it’s rather chalky, but my favorite play is definitely Drew Brees. It’s simply too good of a matchup to pass up and if you have him in your lineup, you’re looking at a floor of about 20 points this week.
Here are the top 5 quarterbacks for Week 9 of the NFL season.
Drew Brees @ SF
Outside of Case Keenum in Week 1 of the season, opposing quarterbacks have thrown multiple touchdowns in each game against the 49ers defense this season. Brees has thrown for multiple touchdowns in all but two games this season, so it should come as little surprise to see him top this week’s rankings.
Aaron Rodgers vs. IND
The Colts are allowing the sixth-most fantasy points per game to opposing signal callers and have recorded just two interceptions in eight games this season. The bad man himself has seven touchdowns in his last two games, giving him a very high floor in Week 9.
Matt Ryan @ TB
Ryan, the top fantasy scoring quarterback through eight weeks, gets to face a Tampa Bay defense that is allowing the seventh-most fantasy points per game to opposing gunslingers. Ryan hasn’t thrown for over 300 yards in the past two weeks, but the Bucs are fresh off a 513-yard outburst from Oakland’s Derek Carr. Ryan is a QB1 this week.
Andrew Luck @ GB
The Packers secondary is bruised up at the moment and given the strength of the Green Bay run defense, the ability to move the football is going to be reliant on Luck’s success through the air. Indianapolis will likely try to establish the run early, to no avail, which will force Luck to air it out a ton in Week 8. He’s a safe QB1 this weekend.
Cam Newton @ LA
Newton hasn’t been great this season to say the least, but perhaps a match-up with the Rams can cure his problems. He hadn’t been running a ton, but he did log seven carries last week, so he should have a secondary method of scoring points this week. The Rams have struggled to contain mobile quarterbacks this season, helping Newton’s case to be a top 5 quarterback.
