2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: Happ was as advertised in 2023, as he put forth solid power numbers, and even logged a career best 14 stolen bases last season. After hitting just .226 in 2021, he hit .271 in 2022, but a .299 BABIP brought his average to just .248 last season. So, from an average perspective, what kind of hitter is Happ? Well, for his career he's a .249 hitter, and in terms of his quality of contact, his nine percent barrel rate last year was a nice rebound after a down 2022 (6.5%). His plate discipline metrics are trending in the right direction, as he posted the lowest swinging strike rate of his career (10.2%) last year, and his contact rate increased for the third-straight season.

2024 Outlook: He was very good in the second half of last season when you really look into the numbers, and his current ADP gives him ample room to massively outperform expectations. His ceiling could see him hit .260 with close to 30 home runs and 12+ stolen bases, though a more attainable projection would be .245-.255 with 25 home runs, 15 stolen bases, and an OBP close to last year's .360 mark. If your league values OBP, push Happ up a few spots, as his improving plate discipline will keep his walk rate inflated.
