2022 Fantasy Football NFL Training Camp News

Aaron Rodgers & Packers Continue To Drop Clues

Earlier this offseason Aaron Rodgers talked explicitly about Allen Lazard potentially making the jump to “wide receiver 1”, something you usually only hear fantasy analysts say. Yesterday, Rodgers struck again with a couple of comments right on the nose. First, the Green Bay Packers quarterback voiced his frustration with the team's “young receivers” and their issues with dropped passes, bad route running, and overall inconsistency in camp.

Plus, maybe more notably, Rodgers suggested that both Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon could get 50 targets this year. Folks were expecting an uptick for Jones, but the more targets for Dillon comes as a bit of a surprise. If both players were to get an even number of targets, that would likely mean Dillon was a better pick at his ADP than Jones – given that Jones goes multiple rounds earlier.

Meanwhile, Dillon participated in a fantasy football draft on Sleeper with a couple analysts recently. He didn’t draft himself but he did draft Aaron Rodgers and rookie Romeo Doubs in the 9th and 10th round. What does that tell us about how the team views Doubs?

Antonio Gibson Not Getting Star Treatment in Washington

When you have a role locked up, you get the star treatment. You are first in drills, you work with the first team, you even get to sit out at times. That’s not what is going on with Antonio Gibson, though. The Washington Commanders running back reportedly worked with the third team for some reps and even worked on punt protection blocking. It’s been reported that Gibson has had some issues holding onto the football so far through camp, which clearly will not be tolerated by head coach Ron Rivera and company.

Seahawks QB Battle Rollercoaster

One second it’s being reported that Drew Lock is getting the first team reps for the Seattle Seahawks and looking like the starter for Thursday’s preseason game. The next moment, it’s reported that Lock has tested positive for COVID and will not be playing. That leaves the door wide open for Geno Smith to come in and show everyone what he can do.

NFL Injury Rumors Gone Wrong

We just mentioned how training camp hype and NFL rumors can get overinflated in this time of limited fantasy football news? Well, Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal reported that New England Patriots pass rusher Matthew Judon left practice and went to the locker room yesterday – implying he might have suffered some sort of injury. Here is Judon’s explanation.

Be careful out there.

Fight Week in the NFL

By now, most folks have heard about the horrible incident involving former player and broadcaster Aqib Talib. News yesterday, however, hinted that Talib may have actually thrown the first punch that started the brawl that led to the shooting. Will keep an eye on that to see what ramifications it may have.

Besides that, things have been testy in New England this week with multiple fights breaking out between the Patriots and Panthers during joint practices. Here’s a glimpse of some of the action.

NFL Trade Alert! J.J. Arcega-Whiteside

The Philadelphia Eagles drafted JJAWs to play wide receiver, but that didn’t work. They then tried him at tight end, which apparently also didn’t work. So now the former second-round pick gets traded to the Seattle Seahawks for defensive back Ugo Amadi. Perhaps a change of scenery will be good for Arcega-Whiteside, but he's not someone you need to hold onto unless it’s a very deep dynasty fantasy football league.

NFL Injury Report: Incoming and Outgoing

Zach Wilson underwent arthroscopic knee surgery that went well. It’s now reported that the New York Jets quarterback won’t miss as much time as expected. Still, the team is also suggesting that it will take it slow with him, meaning we are likely getting a Joe Flacco revenge game in Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Kenneth Walker, the Seattle Seahawks' rookie running back, is reportedly dealing with a hernia issue. No timetable yet on his return, but worst case scenario would involve a surgical procedure similar to what guys like Adrian Peterson or Devonta Freeman underwent in the past.

Chris Godwin was reportedly at Tampa Bay Buccaneers camp running routes in 7-on-7, which is a huge step in his recovery. It was a foregone conclusion that Godwin would miss time given the timeline of his injury, but now an early return seems more and more possible.

Kadarius Toney returned to practice to run some drills. The New York Giants wide receiver has had a bizarre start to his career and he’s dealt with a multitude of injuries in a short span. Still, his obvious explosiveness makes him one of the biggest high-risk, high-reward options out there for fantasy football.
