MLB DFS Lineup Picks: Starting Pitchers

MLB DFS Top Pitchers

Zack Wheeler (PHI)

Analysis: There are some upside concerns with Wheeler today, given his matchup with the lowest strikeout team in the league against right-handed pitching. At the same time, he has one of the longest leashes in the game and could very well work seven innings.  He also still has the stuff to dominate any matchup, and he is projected to be significantly less popular than Burns, Cease, and Peralta.

Chase Burns (CIN)

Analysis: Burns has the highest raw upside on the slate given his dream matchup. The righty has generated strikeouts at a near-30% clip, and he also gets a huge ballpark upgrade for pitchers compared to his home park. San Diego owns the third-worst ISO against right-handed pitching, while striking out at the third-highest rate in baseball.

Dylan Cease (TOR)

Analysis: Cease has the highest strikeout rate on the slate. He's also been on the IL for the last two weeks after a mild hamstring strain. It was a minimum stay for the righty, and he even completed a rehab start (75 pitches) to make sure he was good to go. He draws the Phillies, who have struck out at a top-10 rate and own a below-average 91 wRC+.

Freddy Peralta (NYM)

Analysis: Peralta has experienced a dip in strikeouts this season, but he does get a strong home matchup against the Cardinals. The Redbirds have struck out at the 7th-highest rate against righties, and they own an average 101 wRC+.

MLB DFS Value Pitchers

Dustin May (STL)

Analysis: May has pitched better than his results this season, and that has been especially true over his last three starts, where he has racked up a bunch of whiffs. He's recorded at least seven strikeouts in four of his last five starts, and he posted a swinging-strike rate of at least 12% in each of those four outings. He gets a matchup against the Mets tonight, who have been one of the worst offenses in baseball against right-handed pitching (87 wRC+).

Kai-Wei Teng (HOU)

Analysis: Teng is the other high-upside pitching option in the value tier that will allow us to dedicate more salary to elite bats. He faces a right-handed heavy Angels team that has struck out at the highest rate in the league against righties.

Top Options For Strikeouts

The three top strikeout targets in today's MLB DFS projections each carry a K/9 above 10.4 and favorable opponent strikeout splits. K-prop lines and value ratings are incorporated below for DFS and prop context. These are the arms building the highest strikeout ceilings on the nine-game slate.

Our model identifies these arms as the highest-ceiling plays for Alt-K lines today:

Dylan Cease: 35.7% K% (13.4 K/9)

Chase Burns: 29.7% K% (10.4 K/9)

Freddy Peralta: 29% K% (10.4 K/9)

Zack Wheeler: 25.8% K% (8.9 K/9)

Best Odds For A Win

The following MLB DFS picks offer a combination of favorable win odds, sustainable ERA and xFIP metrics, and soft opponent matchups. Each carry K-prop lines worth noting alongside their DFS value at reduced ownership relative to the top tier.

MLB DFS Lineup Picks: Stacks & Hitters

MLB DFS Top Hitters

Jake Bauers (1B/OF, MIL), Brice Turang (2B, MIL), & Christian Yelich (OF, MIL)

Analysis: The Brewers exploded for 15 runs in Las Vegas Ballpark last night, and they get another great spot again tonight. Ginn has been dominant against righties, but he can be susceptible to lefties. His strikeout rate is five points lower, and his xwOBA allowed is more than 80 points higher when he gives up the platoon advantage. Yelich, Turang, and Bauers are the three top lefties to target for the Brewers.

Pete Crow-Armstrong (OF, CHC), Michael Busch (1B, CHC), & Ian Happ (OF, CHC)

Analysis: The Cubs begin a series in Coors Field and have the highest implied team total of the slate. Sugano has been one of the luckiest pitchers in baseball, and he has allowed a massive amount of hard contact (46.4% hard-hit rate, 16.3% barrel rate). Crow-Armstrong has been scorching hot over the last few weeks. Happ owns a .292 ISO against righties this season, and Busch posted a .281 ISO last year.

Shea Langeliers (C, ATH) & Brent Rooker (OF, ATH)

Analysis: Kurtz and Soderstrom each went for a double-dong last night, but we are pivoting to the righty power bats today. Langeliers has been one of the most productive hitters in baseball against lefties, as his 210 wRC+ ranks fifth among qualified hitters. Rooker is off to a slower start against lefties this season, but he posted a .207 and .298 ISO against them in the two previous seasons.

MLB DFS Value Hitters

Max Muncy (3B, ATH), Henry Bolte (OF, ATH), Zack Gelof (3B, ATH), & Colby Thomas (OF, ATH)

Analysis: Four hitters with a sub $4K DK price tag on a team with 6.5 implied runs? Umm, yes, please. Muncy owns a massive .321 ISO against lefties this season. Thomas is likely to grab the best spot in the order, but he also comes with the most pinch-hit risk. Bolte and Gelof each add stolen base upside to their average power profiles.

David Hamilton (3B/SS, MIL)

Analysis: Hamilton is coming off a red-hot series in Coors, where he tallied five hits and a pair of homers. His stolen base upside helps push up his below-average offensive profile, and he should hit in the nine hole, right in front of all the big bats for Milwaukee.

Wyatt Langford (OF, TEX) & Joc Pederson (OF, TEX)

Analysis: Anything outside of Coors and Las Vegas should be way off the board tonight. The Rangers have multiple value options tonight, but Pederson and Langford top the list. They get a ballpark upgrade in hot and humid KC and face a pitcher with a strikeout of just 18%.

MLB DFS Top Stacks

Primary Stack: Milwaukee Brewers vs J.T. Ginn (ATH RHP)

Why: The Brewers will again take their swings in a minor league ballpark that is 2,000 feet above sea level. The temperatures are in the 90s again, but the wind is not quite as favorable as last night, blowing more left-to-right than out in this instance. Lefties are the priority split against the right-handed Ginn, but righties should also get multiple cracks at a bad bullpen.

Primary Stack: Chicago Cubs vs Tomoyuki Sugano (COL RHP)

Why: The Cubs head into Coors Field for an elite matchup with one of the more power-prone pitchers in the entire league. Sugano has allowed a massive 46% hard-hit rate and 16% barrel rate that have led to more than 1.5 HR/9. Any regression in his .258 BABIP could lead to a lot of crooked numbers for a scuffling but talented Cubs team.

Primary Stack: Athletics vs Robert Gasser (MIL LHP)

Why: Last night, the A's beat up on a pitcher who almost no one has been able to touch this season. They get an even better matchup tonight against another lefty in Gasser. It is again above 90 degrees in a notoriously hitter-friendly minor league ballpark. Expensive hitters like Kurtz and Langeliers are elite options, but there are also value bats sprinkled throughout the lineup.

"Contrarian" Stack: Colorado Rockies vs Colin Rea (CHC RHP)

Why: It's not often that there is a stack implied to score more than 5.5 runs projected to be less than 10% owned, but that is the context we are dealing with today, given the two massive game totals. The Rockies draw a matchup with a power-prone Rea who owns a strikeout rate belw 19%.

"Contrarian" Stack: Texas Rangers vs  Stephen Kolek (KC RHP)

Why: Sneaky good hitting weather in Kansas City is being overshadowed by two massive game totals in Denver and Las Vegas. The very affordable Rangers are flying way under the radar in a plus matchup with a low-strikeout right-hander.

MLB DFS Lineups: Core MLB DFS Hitters & Pitchers

The "Chalk" (Popular)

The "Pivot" (Low

Owned)

The Winning Logic
Peralta (SP, chalk)Wheeler (SP, similar tier)Peralta is garnering the third-most ownership on the slate behind Burns and May, thanks in part to a cheaper salary than Wheeler. There is a little more upside if you can find the extra money for Wheeler.
MIL (Chalk)COL + TEX as contrarian stacksGinn is a talented ground-ball pitcher who has the skillset to hold Milwaukee down, even in a very difficult environment. The Rockies get an outstanding matchup in Coors, and Texas is very affordable against a pitcher who will allow plenty of contact.
Rengifo + Hamilton (chalk value)Muncy + Bolte (higher upside)The cheap Brewers infielders are getting more ownership than their A's counterparts. Muncy has elite numbers against lefties, while Bolte offers a power/speed profile that outpaces his salary.
