A lot of repeat offenders on the list this week. By this point of the season, it should be understood that Greg Olsen, Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham are going to be on this list more often than not. You can even through Delanie Walker in that list. Those guys are the reliable options at a position that can often get overlooked. Olsen (60), Dennis Pitta (57) and Rudolph (48) lead tight ends in targets and if you’re looking for a sneaky play moving forward, take a look at Cleveland’s Gary Barnidge. He has five or more targets in six straight games and is the security blanket for what is turning out to be a quarterback carousel in the city where the Indians and Cavaliers play.
Here are the top 6 tight ends for Week 8 of the NFL season.
Rob Gronkowski @ BUF
Gronkowski is averaging 22 yards per reception and as long as Tom Brady is under center, Gronkowski is an elite option every single week. He’s scored in each of the past two weeks, as well as topping 100 yards in two of his last three outings. It should come as no surprise that he is the top dog this week.
Jimmy Graham @ NO
Jimmy Graham is back! He has eight or more targets in his last four games and Russell Wilson will continue to look to his dynamic, play-making tight end. His 53 receiving yards last week against the Cardinals was the first time he tallied under 89 receiving yards since Week 2. He’s proving to be that reliable asset everyone hoped he would be when coming to Seattle.
Delanie Walker vs. JAC
Walker has seen eight targets in three of the last four and he gets a good matchup against a Jacksonville defense. The Jaguars have been pretty good against opposing tight ends, but they haven’t faced a player of Walker’s caliber all season. In two games against the Jags last season, Walker caught 16 passes on 22 targets for 201 yards and one touchdown. He’s a TE1 this week.
Greg Olsen @ ARI
Olsen’s 60 targets are the most of any tight end this season and he’s been performing at an elite caliber all season. He hasn’t seen less than seven targets in a game this season and he’ll continue to produce, even through Newton’s struggles. The Cardinals have been extremely tough against opposing tight ends, but Russell Wilson and Jimmy Graham connected five times for 53 yards in last week’s outing. Consider that Olsen’s floor in Week 8.
Kyle Rudolph @ CHI
Opposing tight ends have only scored twice against the Bears defense this season, but Rudolph has three touchdowns himself on the season. He hasn’t scored since Week 4, but he continues to see a healthy number of targets. The Minnesota tight end saw 11 targets last week and he’ll continue to be one of Sam Bradford’s top options.
Travis Kelce @ IND
The Colts have been abused by tight ends, particularly over the past three weeks. Opposing tight ends for the Bears, Texans and Titans have combined for 24 receptions for 283 yards and two touchdowns. Kelce only has five receptions since the team’s bye, but seeing as he’s second on the team in routes run and targets, he can’t be held down for long. This will be his breakout game of the season.
