Only two running backs ran for over 100 yards in Week 1, but a whopping 11 players topped the century mark in receiving yards. Some of the names we expected (A.J. Green, Antonio Brown), but some of the others likely came as a surprise (Will Fuller, Spencer Ware). Regardless, when it comes to picking your wide receivers, you want to look at targets, matchups and role in the offense. Targets create opportunities for players to succeed and a personal strategy of mine is to chase targets. But enough about me, let’s get into this week’s top 5 wide receivers.
Julio Jones @ OAK
Jones may be dealing with an ankle injury that is worth monitoring, but the Raiders can’t contain the superstar receiver. Willie Snead and Brandin Cooks torched Oakland for 172 and 143 yards respectively in the opening week, so Julio owners can expect a big game from the complete receiver.
Odell Beckham vs. NO
It’s an understatement to say that OBJ has a dream matchup. The Saints defense is absolutely horrendous and he’s the clear-cut top option in the New York passing attack. After a rather quiet Week 1, get ready for an explosion.
Is this really even a surprise to see Brown in the top 5? Did you see what Brown did on Monday Night Football? The Roethlisberger-to-Brown connection is absolutely lethal and the Bengals won’t be able to stop him.
A.J. Green @ PIT
Green’s 43.3% target share in Week 1 led the NFL and he absolutely set Revis Island on fire. The offense flows through Green and seeing as the Bengals will need to keep up with Pittsburgh, expect a lot of Dalton-to-Green in this AFC North showdown.
Allen Robinson @ SD
His six catches for 72 yards in Week 1 look unimpressive, but his 15 targets were nine more than anyone on his team. The offense funnels through him and he’s a WR1 every single week. His 187 missed opportunity yards led the league in Week 1, so if he and Bortles can connect more this week, those numbers will vastly improve.
