Yankees vs. Rangers Prediction: Tuesday, April 28th

We have a marquee starting pitching matchup on tap as the Texas Rangers host the New York Yankees tonight. Jacob deGrom toes the rubber for Texas, while Cam Schlittler starts for the visiting Yanks. One side features a pitcher who’s still dominating at age 37, while his counterpart is among the top rising aces.  

Jacob deGrom owns a 2.13 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over his first 5 starts this season. The Rangers’ veteran was shaky in his first outing, but he’s since allowed only 3 runs over his last 4 starts combined. The right-hander boasts an elite 34.7% strikeout rate (95th MLB percentile) with a 32.2% whiff rate (86th). 

The Yankees present a tough matchup, with a top-5 lineup against righties. However, deGrom has the stuff to keep them in check. His swing-and-miss ability is still among the best in the league, which is key against New York’s lofty 24.3% strikeout rate (7th-highest in MLB). Plus, deGrom posted a 2.35 ERA at home last season, and he has a 3.14 ERA in his career against the Yankees. 

Meanwhile, Cam Schlittler brings in a 1.77 ERA and 0.73 WHIP over his first 6 starts. The advanced metrics suggest he can keep this going, too. The Yankees’ young right-hander owns a 1.53 FIP with a 30.8% strikeout rate (89th percentile), 3.0% walk rate (97th), 41.1% chase rate (99th), and .206 xBA (79th). This is elite stuff from the second-year starter. 

Schlittler now faces a Rangers offense that’s struggled against righties lately. Over the past week in the split, they have a .288 wOBA (26th in MLB) and 80 wRC+ (25th). Texas also has one of the league’s worst home offenses this year, with a .278 wOBA (28th) and 74 wRC+ (28th). 

Let’s bank on both deGrom and Schlittler showing out tonight in a classic pitchers’ duel. Grab the under for the full game. Both the Texas and New York bullpens boast sub-3.00 ERAs over the past week as well. It helps that last night’s series opener between these clubs finished in a 4-2 final scoreline. 

Diamondbacks vs. Brewers Prediction: Tuesday, April 28th

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers are both stumbling a bit coming into Tuesday’s series-opening matchup. The Brew Crew is just 2-5 over the last 7 games and 6-11 over the past few weeks. Meanwhile, the D-backs are 2-4 over their last 6 contests. Let’s back one of those sides for our MLB best bets today. 

On the surface, Merrill Kelly’s 9.31 ERA and 2.28 WHIP this year are ugly. However, he’s only made 2 starts, and just one of those was terrible. The Arizona right-hander got lit up for 8 runs on 10 hits by the White Sox in his latest outing. Before that, though, he tossed 5.1 innings of 2-run ball against the Orioles. 

Count on Kelly bouncing back today. Notably, the ChiSox have been crushing right-handed pitching lately. The Brewers, conversely, have really struggled in the split. Over the past two weeks, Milwaukee has had a league-worst .274 wOBA and 71 wRC+ vs. righties. The offense is also batting a league-low .201 against right-handers over the last week of games.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks can provide some run support in their own matchup. Chad Patrick will be on the mound for Milwaukee, whether as a regular starter or primary pitcher. He owns an impressive 2.35 ERA across 5 outings this season, but he’s also likely due for negative regression. 

Patrick’s 4.34 FIP and 5.59 xFIP are notably higher than that sub-3.00 ERA. His underlying metrics are all very underwhelming as well. The right-hander has an 11.7% strikeout rate (3rd MLB percentile), 22.2% whiff rate (32nd), 8.5% walk rate (55th), and 41.3% hard-hit rate (41st). Though he has limited the runs thus far, some shakier outings could be coming. 

Arizona’s offense will be tough for Patrick to navigate today. The Diamondbacks boast a top-10 lineup against right-handed pitching over the past week, with a .368 wOBA and 133 wRC+ in the split. We also just saw Patrick have issues against the Blue Jays last time out, allowing 4 runs and 6 hits over 4 innings. 

There’s value on the D-backs to get the road win tonight. Plus, we can back Kelly to best Patrick in the early innings for Arizona to lead after five frames.
