San Francisco Giants vs. St. Louis Cardinals Predictions: Sunday, September 7th
The San Francisco Giants are rolling lately as they climb up the NL Wild Card standings. The Giants have won 11 of their last 13 games heading into Sunday’s matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals. Let’s back the visitors to get back into the win column after losing yesterday.Â
St. Louis starter Sonny Gray has been very up-and-down since the All-Star break. He owns a 6.44 ERA/5.03 FIP over his past 9 starts, and a 6.65 ERA/5.53 FIP over his past 4 outings. The veteran right-hander has also given up 6+ runs in 4 of his last 9 starts.Â
One of Gray’s recent rough starts just came last Monday, when he allowed 7 runs on 11 hits at home to the Athletics. Another poor outing could be coming in today’s matchup. The Giants have been the MLB’s top lineup vs. right-handed pitchers over the past two weeks. In this stretch, they have a .336 BA, .408 wOBA, 167 wRC+, and .961 OPS.Â
San Fran is also averaging 7.4 runs per game over the past 13 contests. The offense has largely powered the Giants’ recent winning surge. They can get to Gray, whose blowups lately are worrisome in this spot. Â
Meanwhile, there’s value in backing the upside of Giants starter Kai-Wei Teng. The right-hander looked shaky in four August outings. Then he got sent back down to Triple-A and returned to the San Francisco rotation last Monday. There were clear adjustments, as he allowed 2 runs with 8 strikeouts over 5.1 solid innings.Â
Let’s hope that version of Teng shows up today. It’s worth noting that his 3.63 FIP is miles lower than his current 7.23 ERA over 18.2 MLB innings this year. On Sunday, he’ll face a Cardinals offense that’s struggled against right-handers. Over the past two weeks vs. righties, St. Louis has a .191 BA, .259 wOBA, and 65 wRC+.Â

Boston Red Sox vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Predictions: Sunday, September 7th
We wrongly backed the Boston Red Sox in yesterday’s MLB Best Bets. Well, let’s go right back to the well. The Sox have now lost three straight games, including the first two matchups in this series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.Â
Interestingly, Boston hasn’t lost four in a row since the end of June. That’s also the last time the club got swept. The Red Sox should be motivated and ready to end the mini losing streak today, especially with some stats and splits in their favor here.Â
Boston starter Brayan Bello is pitching very well lately. He owns a 2.16 ERA over his past 4 starts and a 2.69 ERA over his past 11 starts. That also includes 2 earned runs or fewer in 7 of his last 11 outings.Â
Bello boasts a 2.85 ERA on the road this year as well. Coming into this road appearance, he’s recorded a quality start in 4 of his last 5 road outings. The Red Sox righty will face an Arizona offense that’s struggled in the split lately. Over the past two weeks, the Diamondbacks have a .248 wOBA (29th in MLB), .211 BA (23rd), and 29.8% strikeout rate (28th) vs. right-handers.Â
Meanwhile, the Boston offense should bounce back after being held to 1 run on Saturday. The Red Sox are crushing right-handed pitching recently, with a .379 wOBA and 140 wRC+ in the split over the past week. They’re also a top-tier offense vs. righties over the past two weeks (.361 wOBA, 128 wRC+).Â
As for Arizona starter Ryne Nelson, he’s been shaky lately. The righty has a 4.85 ERA over his past 5 starts and a 4.09 FIP over his last 10 outings now. Even at home here, Nelson could run into trouble against this Boston lineup.Â
