PGA DFS Coverage for the Shriners Children’s Open

Congratulations to Canadian Mackenzie Hughes on picking up his second career PGA Tour victory at last week’s Sanderson Farms Championship. The 63 he shot on Friday put him into prime position before claiming the title in a playoff over Sepp Straka. It gives him a nice leg up to start the 2022-2023 PGA Tour season.

The PGA Tour heads to “Sin City” for the Shriners Children’s Open. This tournament was founded in 1983 but has been a part of the tour’s wrap-around fall schedule for four years now. The event has been hosted by multiple courses in the Las Vegas area but is currently being held at TPC Summerlin. Defending champion Sungjae Im leads a decent field into this weekend that should feature a ton of low scores.

The Field: Shriners Children’s Open

As mentioned above, defending champion Sungjae Im leads a field of players which features Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa, and a total of 12 players inside the Top-50 of the World Golf Rankings. You have to think that the lure of Las Vegas brings in a better than average crop of players. Once again, we’ve got a lot of good young up and comers like Tom Kim, Aaron Wise, Taylor Montgomery, Cam Davis, Taylor Pendrith, Thomas Detry and Davis Riley. You can get the edge on the competition later this season by watching these events. These are the guys who are going to be value plays during the bulk of the PGA Tour season. You are seeing the future of the tour because of the LIV poaching top tier talent over the last 12 months.

The Course: TPC Summerlin

The course went through a major overhaul a few years back after nearly 25 years. All 102 bunkers were redone and fitted with white sand.  In a lot of the cases, they were relocated to enhance the value of strategy for today’s talent. TPC Summerlin sits between 7,200-7,300 yards in length depending on the tee boxes and plays as a Par 71. That distance is deceiving because of the thin air in Las Vegas, it plays a lot shorter than the actual distance. The 280 hitters hit it 300, the 300 hitters can stretch it to 320 and so on. We need birdie makers this weekend because 10 of the last 12 editions of this event the winner has ended at 20 under par or better. Players have to finish 3-to-5 under par each day to keep themselves in the hunt for a Top-10 finish.

The Weather: Las Vegas, Nevada

The weather should be exactly what you expect from Las Vegas in October. No rain in the forecast at all with sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 80s throughout the weekend.

How To Watch the Shriners Children’s Open

It will be very easy to follow the tournament this weekend. Thursday and Friday the coverage will be from 5-8pm ET on the Golf Channel.  Saturday and Sunday the time will shift to 4-7pm ET. These fall swing schedule events don’t get a lot of television coverage.
