NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today 10/24

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Edmonton Oilers: Saturday, October 24th

When you get a matchup between these two teams its rarely ever boring and even in a ten game main slate this one figures to turn the day upside down!

In their last 10 games the Oilers and Maple Leafs each rank in the top 10 of of scoring at even strength. The Oilers are recording 2.7 goals while the the Maple Leafs are putting away 2.3. The real kicker though is the defensive play, mostly from Toronto as they've given up more five on five goals than any team in the NHL of their last 10 with 30 goals against. 

The goaltending won't be standing in the way either as Tristan Jarry is slated to start for Edmonton tonight and his -0.892 goals saved above expected per 60 minutes ranks 52nd out of 58 qualified goaltenders. On the Toronto side Sergei Bobrovsky has been middle of the pack across many metrics but against this Oilers offense I wish him luck. 

If you didn't piece it together by now we are taking the over in this matchup of offensive titans and hoping numbers stay the course for tonight.

Minnesota Wild vs. Seattle Kraken: Saturday, October 24th

If you've been following the early part of this NHL season then you know the Kraken are one of the biggest surprises out of the gate at 7-3-1. On the surface things are great in Seattle but if you dig deeper into the numbers you'll find the levy may be ready to break. 

Seattle has been playing above their means for about a month now and its baffling to someone like me that lives in the data for a living. When it comes to expected goals they've been living above their means for a while now. The offense has scored 2.7 goals per game at even strength this season while being projected closer to 1.8, that's a huge gap that will be corrected. On the other hand the Wild sit at 2.2 expected goals but are scoring just 1.8 at five on five play.

This one figures to have some course correction on both sides in my opinion so I will take the Wild to win tonight on the road. On top of that the Kraken are allowing the second most shots against when playing five on five and the Wild have some burners that love shooting the puck. Matt Boldy has been the biggest trigger man on the team with 51 shots in 11 games this season. Let's go ahead and wager on his shots prop tonight in what could be a Minnesota shooting gallery.

Goalie of The Day: Jeremy Swayman, BOS

What can we say about Swayman that we don't already see on a game to game basis? The man is locked in again this season and his metrics are fantastic to go along with his 1.98 GAA and .928 SV%. The Sharks are struggling on offense right now and are on the road, lock in this stud as your goalie. 

Player of The Day: Kirill Kaprizov, MIN

Like I wrote in the best bets, the reckoning day is coming for Seattle sooner rather than later and Kaprizov stands to eat tonight because of that. He star winger has 11 goals in 11 games and the Kraken allow the 3rd most DFS points to left wingers on the season, no brainer for me here. 

Value Play of The Day: Sidney Crosby, PIT

One of the best players of all time is having a slow start to the season and DFS pricing has allowed us to take advantage on pricing because of that. Nashville has struggled on defense and they allow the 8th most DFS points per game to centers on the season. Crosby will not be held down much longer folks, get in there are win on being proactive. 

Defenseman Play of the Day: Evan Bouchard, EDM

I could probably just copy and paste Bouchard into this section every game the Oilers play as he's been amazing this season. The opponent in Toronto is not playing defense and the Edmonton blue liner has 19 points in 10 games, that's more than your teams favorite winger most likely. 

Top Stack of the Day: Wild Forward Line 1

Fade the Kraken! This line for Kaprizov, Joel Eriksson Ek and Matt Boldy is super talented and they are gelling so well right now with generating shots and goals. Line up the Wild and watch the green numbers stack up tonight, I can't wait.
