Colts vs. Chiefs DFS Picks & Preview: Sunday Night Football, 9/20

Sunday night’s matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs brings two teams heading in very different directions after Week 1. The Colts are looking to rebound from a 41-23 loss to Baltimore, while the Chiefs enter after a convincing 31-10 win over Denver. Indianapolis will likely lean heavily on Jonathan Taylor, who rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns in the opener, while quarterback Daniel Jones faces a major challenge against a Kansas City defense that recorded four sacks last week.

For Kansas City, the biggest question is whether its dominant rushing attack can continue to roll. Kenneth Walker erupted for 173 rushing yards and a touchdown against Denver, giving Patrick Mahomes a powerful complement in the backfield. Mahomes also showed plenty of mobility in his return from injury, while the Chiefs' defense limited Denver to just 176 total yards. The key battle could come down to Indianapolis' ability to slow Walker and Taylor's ability to keep the Colts' offense on schedule. With both teams looking to establish the run, the game could hinge on which quarterback can make the critical plays when defenses inevitably force the ball into the air.

NFL Weather: Colts vs. Chiefs SNF, September 20th

Warm, humid, and mostly cloudy conditions are expected for Colts-Chiefs, with temperatures in the low 70s around kickoff and light winds. There is also a chance of rain and thunderstorms throughout the evening, which could add some uncertainty to the passing and kicking games.

Colts vs. Chiefs Injuries: Sunday Night Football Week 1

The Colts and Chiefs enter Sunday night with relatively manageable injury situations, but there are a few names worth monitoring for DFS. Kansas City will be without starting left tackle Josh Simmons (back) and safety Chamarri Conner (knee), both ruled out, while defensive tackle Chris Jones (calf) and cornerback Mansoor Delane (shoulder) are questionable. Jones is particularly important for the Chiefs’ defensive matchup if he cannot go.

For Indianapolis, wide receiver Ashton Dulin (ankle) is out, while running back D.J. Giddens (knee) is questionable after returning to full practice Friday. Giddens’ status is worth watching from a DFS perspective because an absence could create additional opportunities in the Colts' backfield. Anthony Richardson (groin) and Alec Pierce (heel) practiced fully on Friday and do not carry game-status designations, so both are expected to be available.

NFL Sunday Night Football DFS Picks: MVP/Captain

Kenneth Walker, RB, Kansas City Chiefs - DraftKings: $10,600 | FanDuel: $11,800

Walker announced his arrival in Kansas City with a massive workload, exploding for 173 rushing yards and two total touchdowns. He registered 23 carries and six targets last week, suggesting a strong workload floor, and Kansas City could lean on him again with the Chiefs favored by 6.5 points.

He's the most expensive player on the slate, but for good reason. His combination of volume, explosive-play ability, and touchdown upside gives him an elite floor/ceiling combination that is worth spending on.

Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs - DraftKings: $10,000 | FanDuel: $11,600

Mahomes enters this matchup with plenty of upside despite a relatively modest Week 1 passing line. He completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns against Denver, but added 23 rushing yards and a score on seven carries, giving him a strong rushing floor and eliminating most concerns about his surgically repaired knee.

The matchup is appealing, as Indianapolis struggled against the pass in Week 1 and allowed Lamar Jackson to have a highly productive day through the air.

The biggest concern for Mahomes’ DFS ceiling is Kansas City’s newfound commitment to the run after Kenneth Walker and the Chiefs’ ground game produced 220 yards in the opener.

Jonathan Taylor, RB, Indianapolis Colts – DraftKings: $11,000 | FanDuel: $12,400

Taylor opened the season with 98 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, adding three catches for 23 yards, and Indianapolis should continue to lean on him heavily after he was clearly the centerpiece of the offense in Week 1.

The matchup is less appealing, though, as Kansas City allowed the eighth-fewest rushing yards to running backs last season and held Denver to 62 rushing yards in Week 1.

Taylor's biggest concern is game script, as the Colts are 6.5-point road dogs, but his volume and touchdown upside keep him firmly in play.

Daniel Jones, QB, Indianapolis Colts – DraftKings: $9,200 | FanDuel: $10,400

Jones was shaky in Week 1, completing 19 of 31 passes for 166 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Chiefs generated pressure at an elite rate in their opener, recording four sacks against Denver, and Jones struggled with pressure against Baltimore.

The path to a strong DFS score largely depends on volume and rushing production. Jones has some rushing upside, but he managed only four yards on one carry in Week 1. If the Colts need to turn to a pass-heavy game plan or Jones manages to find the end zone on the ground, there is legitimate upside despite the tough matchup.

NFL Sunday Night Football DFS Picks: Core Plays

Rashee Rice, WR, Kansas City Chiefs  – DraftKings: $9,400 | FanDuel: $10,800

Rice is an intriguing bounce-back candidate after a quiet Week 1. He caught just two passes for 19 yards on two targets against Denver, salvaging his fantasy night with a touchdown, while his 8% target share was easily the lowest of his career.

The matchup offers some encouragement, as Indianapolis allowed strong efficiency to opposing receivers in Week 1, and Rice has already shown he can produce against the Colts, posting 141 yards on eight catches in their meeting last season.

Tyler Warren, TE, Indianapolis Colts – DraftKings: $7,200 | FanDuel: $7,600

Warren caught 3-of-5 targets for 13 yards and a touchdown in Week 1, with his five targets ranking second on the team.

The matchup is somewhat concerning after Kansas City held Denver’s passing attack in check, but the Broncos did find some success through their tight ends, which offers a potential path for Warren.

Travis Kelce, TE, Kansas City Chiefs – DraftKings: $6,200 | FanDuel: $7,200

Kelce opened the season with three catches for 71 yards on five targets, including a 59-yard catch-and-run. His 18.5% target share and 78.8% route participation show that he remains a significant part of Kansas City’s passing game, while Indianapolis presents a favorable matchup after allowing Baltimore’s tight ends to combine for 66 yards in Week 1.

Kelce’s Week 1 production was heavily dependent on one big play, and he didn’t see a red-zone or deep target. Still, the combination of his route volume, connection with Mahomes, and matchup gives him a strong ceiling.

Xavier Worthy, WR, Kansas City Chiefs – DraftKings: $5,400 | FanDuel: $9,400

Worthy caught just 3-of-6 targets for 18 yards against Denver, but the six targets tied for the team lead, and his 22.2% target share and 30% first-read share were both encouraging.

The matchup is attractive after Indianapolis struggled against opposing receivers in Week 1, and Worthy brings the big-play ability to take advantage if Kansas City opens up the passing game.

NFL Sunday Night Football DFS Picks: Mid-Tier Plays

Alec Pierce, WR, Indianapolis Colts – DraftKings: $7,600 | FanDuel: $8,600

Pierce is an intriguing upside play after seeing six targets and turning them into four catches for 61 yards in Week 1. His 19.4% target share and team-leading 31.6% first-read share are encouraging, particularly as Indianapolis continues to ramp up his workload following offseason heel surgery.

Josh Downs, WR, Indianapolis Colts – DraftKings: $6,600 | FanDuel: $8,200

Downs caught a disappointing 2-of-4 targets for 37 yards in Week 1. The encouraging part is his playing time. Downs played on nearly 89% of Indianapolis’ offensive snaps and ran a route on 85.3% of dropbacks, but his 12.9% target share leaves him needing more volume to reach his ceiling.

Keenan Allen, WR, Indianapolis Colts – DraftKings: $5,600 | FanDuel: $6,400

Allen caught all six of his targets for just 32 yards in Week 1, but the volume is encouraging. His 19.4% target share tied for the team lead, and he accounted for 26.3% of Indianapolis' first reads. The concern is the matchup, as Kansas City allowed the second-fewest yards per target to perimeter receivers in Week 1, where Allen ran 72% of his routes outside.

With a limited downfield role and modest yards-after-catch upside, Allen needs volume or a touchdown to pay off.

NFL Sunday Night Football DFS Picks: Value Plays

Emmett Johnson, RB, Kansas City Chiefs – DraftKings: $3,600 | FanDuel: $5,200

Emmett Johnson is an intriguing value option after showing big-play ability in his NFL debut. He rushed for 24 yards on eight carries but added 44 receiving yards on just two catches, with both receptions going for at least 19 yards.

Walker dominated Kansas City’s backfield in Week 1, so Johnson remains a secondary option unless the Chiefs expand his role. Still, Indianapolis allowed 202 rushing yards in its opener, and Johnson’s receiving ability gives him a path to production even on limited touches.

Tyquan Thornton, WR, Kansas City Chiefs – DraftKings: $3,800 | FanDuel: $4,600

Thornton saw just one target in Week 1, but it came 36 yards downfield, highlighting the deep-threat role he has in Kansas City’s offense. Thornton also played 47 of the Chiefs’ 69 offensive snaps, giving him a solid route opportunity despite the lack of targets. That amount of time on the field gives him slightly more upside than a simple vertical role might suggest.

Noah Gray, TE, Kansas City Chiefs – DraftKings: $3,000 | FanDuel: $4,000

Gray played 38 of Kansas City’s 69 offensive snaps in Week 1 but saw just one target, turning it into five yards. With Kelce still commanding the bulk of the Chiefs’ tight-end usage, Gray’s floor is extremely low. His best path to value would come from a touchdown or an unexpected increase in targets, making him a thin punt play reserved for only the largest field tournaments.

SNF DFS Picks: Kickers & D/ST

Harrison Butker converted all five of his kicks in Week 1, including a field goal and four extra points. Kansas City’s offensive efficiency gives Butker a strong opportunity for scoring chances, although his Week 1 production was driven primarily by extra points.

Indianapolis is a 6.5-point underdog, which creates some concern about the Colts’ scoring opportunities, but Spencer Shrader can still benefit if the Colts stall in the red zone or settle for field goals.

The Chiefs D/ST is the more attractive side of this showdown slate. Kansas City dominated Denver in Week 1, allowing just 176 total yards while recording four sacks and two takeaways. Indianapolis also gave up four sacks last week, adding to the Chiefs’ pressure upside.

The Colts D/ST is a much thinner option, as it faces Patrick Mahomes and a Kansas City offense that scored 31 points in Week 1. With D/ST scoring remaining one of the most volatile outcomes in fantasy, the Colts remain in play as a value option.
