Eagles vs. Chiefs Predictions, Picks & Odds: NFL Week 2, 9/14
We don’t always get a Super Bowl rematch. But it just so happens that the NFC East is playing the AFC West this year. The NFL almost got it perfectly right with the scheduling - making it a Week 2 game rather than throwing it on Week 1 was smart but having it as the Sunday Night Football game would have been nice. The 4:00 PM ET slate will have to do.
These games are always tough to handicap. We know a lot of these powerhouse teams are capable of winning on any given Sunday. It’s our job to dig into the narratives, injuries, and trends for each team to see if there is any way to get an advantage!

Eagles vs. Chiefs Predictions For NFL Week 1, Sunday 1:00 PM ET
The Chiefs and Eagles wouldn’t generally meet up all that often given how NFL schedule-making works. But two recent Super Bowl meetings have had them squaring off three times over the last three years. The Eagles have won the last two matchups since the Chiefs won the Super Bowl in February of 2023. As we know, that also includes the most recent Super Bowl win by Philly.
Last week, the Eagles won a tough division game against the Dallas Cowboys. Some tough defensive plays as well as some key drops by CeeDee Lamb and Jake Ferguson helped seal the deal. The Chiefs are coming off a surprising division loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. It’s not necessarily surprising that they lost, but it was surprising in how the Chargers decided to attack Kansas City through the air.
Philadelphia Eagles: Missing A Key Piece
The Eagles' offense has generally been highly consolidated. We know who the key weapons are. Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert. This week they’ll be without Goedert as he deals with a knee injury. They’ll need the WRs to step up, especially Brown, who was surprisingly quiet last week.
The Eagles defense is not only one of the best in the league but also one of the most complex under Vic Fangio. Their use of exotic coverages with “if this, then that” sets of rules can be incredibly confusing for opposing quarterbacks. That’s how they were able to pick off Patrick Mahomes twice in last year’s Super Bowl, including a pick six.
Kansas City Chiefs: Losing Receivers Left And Right
The Chiefs had a pretty deep group of pass-catchers. But that is certainly being put to the test. Rashee Rice received a six-game suspension, so he was set to miss time. Rookie draft pick Jalen Royals has not yet suited up with a knee injury. Then last week, a freak collision put Xavier Worthy out of the game with a shoulder issue - he is out for Week 2. That puts a lot of pressure on Travis Kelce and Hollywood Brown, who saw 16 targets last week.
There once was a time where everything rested on the shoulder of Patrick Mahomes because the Chiefs had a weak defense. Those days are over. The Chiefs defense has become a strength behind stars like pass-rusher Chris Jones and lockdown corner Trent McDuffie. There aren’t many concerns on that side of the ball.

I get that the Chiefs are the home team here - Kansas City is a tough place to play. Naturally, it’s a lot tougher place to play later in the season when the weather is more of an issue. In this particular game, I’m less concerned about where it’s being played and more concerned about who is playing in it.
Patrick Mahomes is naturally a superstar so he can make due with lesser weapons. But being down both of your top two wide receivers in Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy is a tough ask when facing the reigning Super Bowl Champs. I’m a believer in Travis Kelce but Zack Baun is one of the better cover linebackers and Cooper Dejean in the slot will chip in as well. Yes, Hollywood Brown did get a ton of targets last week but he was not super efficient with the and had a pretty brutal drop.
The Eagles are missing Dallas Goedert but he misses time every year so they are accustomed to playing without him. Missing guys like Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, or the wide receivers would have been the bigger problem. Grant Calcaterra should step in just fine and I think the Eagles take care of business.
