Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned Battle of the Horses? The Denver Broncos vs. the Indianapolis Colts for stallion supremacy. And, as of late, both of these teams have more in common than their mascots.

They are both teams trending upwards after some down years of rebuilding. They both have mobile quarterbacks at the helm who can make things happen with their legs. And they are both riding high coming off Week 1 victories.

Broncos vs. Colts Predictions For NFL Week 1, Sunday 1:00 PM ET

These teams have not squared off very often. And they certainly have not played each other with Bo Nix and Daniel Jones as the quarterbacks. They did play last season, which resulted in a 31-13 win by Denver. Their last two matchups prior to that were back in 2022 and 2019, with the Colts winning both. Not a lot of actionable information can be derived from that, given the new quarterback in Indy.

As we mentioned, both teams are coming off wins. The Colts just had a decisive 33-8 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The Broncos didn’t have much trouble with first overall pick Cam Ward either as they won 20-12.

Denver Broncos: In Search Of A Second Weapon

Courtland Sutton has been a reliable option for Bo Nix. He led the offensive producers in Denver last year with an ~85% snap share. Meanwhile, no other offensive weapon played more than 53% of the snaps on the season. And three of the top next top four leaders in snaps (Javonte Williams, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, and DeVaughn Vele) are no longer with the team. Adam Trautman is the one from that group who is back.

Week One of this season saw more of the same. Sutton played 95% of the snaps. No one else played more than 53%. They are hoping that guys like JK Dobbins, RJ Harvey, Troy Franklin, and Evan Engram can step up. But it’s yet to be seen. Evan Engram left last week’s game with a calf issue but is a go for this week after getting in a full practice.

The Broncos defense, on the other hand, has their identity pretty solidified. With Nik Bonitto getting after the quarterback and Pat Surtain locking down the opposing top options, they have one of the best units in the league.

Indianapolis Colts: The Daniel Jones Era

The Colts, on the other hand, have no shortage of great weapons. Jonathan Taylor is a stud. Michael Pittman Jr is as tough as they come and looks healthy after playing through a broken back last year. Alec Pierce can stretch the field, and Josh Downs is dangerous out of the slot. Plus, their newest weapon, rookie tight end Tyler Warren, looks like the real deal.

The one thing they have been missing is a quarterback. And they seemingly found their man as Daniel Jones won the job in an impressive enough fashion to be named a team captain. He came out last week looking fantastic in a 33-8 win over Miami. He not only threw the ball well but flashed his mobility running for two scores.

The Colts' defense looked fairly stout this past week, especially up front. But they could be without a couple of starters this week in CB Charvarius Ward and Edge Laiatu Latu. Latu was graded as the top defender on this unit last week per PFF, so it would be a tough loss to not have him out there.

Broncos vs. Colts: Colts Moneyline (+105 at BetMGM Sportsbook )

It’s difficult to dismiss our preconceived notions about certain organizations. But we have to acknowledge when a major change has occurred. The truth about the Indianapolis Colts is that they’ve had many tremendous pieces for a long time, but were just missing the most important one - a quarterback.

Daniel Jones might not be a superstar even if he played like one last week. But he doesn’t have to be. The Colts are loaded with weapons and, unlike some teams like the Titans last week with Calvin Ridley, Patrick Surtain can’t take all of them away. The Colts' drubbing of the Miami Dolphins last week might not necessarily be a sign that the Dolphins are terrible, but perhaps part of that was that the Colts are, in fact, good.

Right now, they are also catching the Denver Broncos at an odd time - when their new acquisitions are quite at full speed. Second-round rookie RJ Harvey has not carved out a meaningful role, possibly due to pass-blocking issues. Third-round rookie Pat Bryant only managed to play four snaps last week. Evan Engram is dealing with a calf issue that could limit him to a part-time role. This game is closer to a coin flip than some are giving it credit for, so I’ll take the Colts with plus money.
