NFL DFS Ownership & Leverage Week 1, 2026: Best Chalk & Contrarian Plays
Week 1's here, and it's honestly the toughest week all year to nail ownership. No in-season usage data to lean on, backfields still sorting themselves out, and the field is basically drafting off camp buzz, ADP, and salary. That's a recipe for some of the widest DK/FD ownership gaps you'll see all season, and that's where the leverage lives.
Here's the rundown, straight from Fantasy Alarm's DK and FD models: the chalk, the low-owned names worth knowing, where the real leverage is hiding, and a few GPP builds around all of it.
NFL DFS Ownership Projections Week 1
It's a 12-game main slate, split between the 1:00 and 4:25 ET windows. Two games are doing most of the ownership work: Saints-Lions carries the slate's highest total (49.5, Lions -7) and is feeding Gibbs, Olave, and the Saints' passing game, while Bills-Texans and Ravens-Colts anchor the running back pool at the top of both salary boards. On the other end, Jets-Titans has the lowest total on the board (39.5), and that low-scoring shape is exactly the kind of game that gets one defense way overowned, more on that below.
Highest-Owned NFL DFS Players
Gibbs is the chalkiest name on the board, and it's not close. Chase and Bijan follow, and then things get interesting: Michael Mayer, the Raiders' backup-turned-starter now that Brock Bowers is out, has rocketed into the top three.
| Player | Pos | Team | DK Salary | DK Own% | FD Salary | FD Own% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jahmyr Gibbs | RB | DET | $8,000 | 41.2% | $9,100 | 42.3% |
| Ja'Marr Chase | WR | CIN | $7,800 | 29.5% | $8,900 | 31.2% |
| Michael Mayer | TE | LV | $2,900 | 26.0% | $4,600 | 21.9% |
| Bijan Robinson | RB | ATL | $7,700 | 25.7% | $8,800 | 25.4% |
| Chris Olave | WR | NO | $6,700 | 25.6% | $7,400 | 27.4% |
| Amon-Ra St. Brown | WR | DET | $7,500 | 22.8% | $8,600 | 20.1% |
The real story is the Bowers injury working through the pool, Mayer went from an afterthought to a top-three overall play in a matter of days.
Best NFL DFS Chalk Plays
- Jahmyr Gibbs (RB, DET) vs. NO: Detroit's a 7-point favorite with the slate's highest implied total, and between the offensive line and his receiving work, Gibbs has one of the safest floors around against a Saints run defense that was bottom-of-the-league bad last year.
- Ja'Marr Chase (WR, CIN) vs. TB: Chase eats volume no matter who's across from him, and this game carries the highest total on the slate. This is chalk because of target share, not a soft matchup, the kind you can actually trust.
- Bijan Robinson (RB, ATL) vs. PIT: Bijan's touching the ball 20-plus times almost no matter what happens, even as a 3.5-point dog. A 42.5-point total means his role holds up regardless of script.
- Chris Olave (WR, NO) vs. DET: New Orleans is a 7-point dog in the slate's highest-total game, garbage-time volume if Detroit pulls away, pass-funnel coverage even if they don't. Olave's the clear No. 1 read, and a chunk of his ownership doubles as a Lions bring-back bet.
- Jaguars DST vs. CLE: Jacksonville's laying 8.5 in the lowest-total game on the slate, that's blowout math against a rookie-heavy Browns offense, and it's made this the chalkiest DST on DraftKings. FanDuel's field is barely on it at all.
- Michael Mayer (TE, LV) vs. MIA: Bowers is out with a meniscus issue, and the field has fully caught up, Mayer's rostered like a top-three overall play at a $2,900 salary. The fastest-moving chalk story on the slate.
- Travis Etienne (RB, NO) vs. DET: Kamara's Q tag is basically priced as an out, and the Saints paid Etienne real money this offseason to be the guy. He's a legit fourth piece in this game next to Olave, Vele, and Juwan Johnson.
Best NFL DFS Low-Owned Plays
Every Week 1 gives you a handful of low-owned guys with real salary and a real role, usually because of a crowded backfield, an injury tag, or new-team uncertainty. Here's who's worth knowing before lineups lock.
| Player | Pos | Team | DK Salary | DK Own% | FD Own% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brian Thomas | WR | JAX | $5,500 | 0.3% | 0.4% |
| Stefon Diggs | WR | WAS | $5,200 | 1.4% | 0.8% |
| Jayden Daniels | QB | WAS | $6,500 | 0.9% | 1.4% |
| Trey McBride | TE | ARI | $6,800 | 2.3% | 1.9% |
| DJ Moore | WR | BUF | $5,600 | 1.7% | 0.6% |
| Aaron Rodgers | QB | PIT | $5,300 | 1.3% | 0.3% |
Brian Thomas is cleared off his shoulder tag and full-go, ownership just hasn't caught up. Diggs is a locked-in starter opposite McLaurin but buried under Barkley/Eagles chalk, and Daniels is just collateral damage from the field fading the whole Commanders side. McBride is priced like a top-five tight end while the field goes cheaper instead. DJ Moore is Buffalo's WR1 outright, but Houston's defense, the best in the league, is scaring people off him and James Cook both. And Rodgers is locked in as the starter, but at 42 and coming off his lightest workload in years, people still aren't buying it.
Washington-Philadelphia is the best watering hole for low-owned pieces on the whole slate, everyone's piling onto Barkley and the Eagles, leaving Daniels, Diggs, and Washington's backfield practically untouched in a game with a real total. There's also a QB value tier the ownership hasn't priced in: Murray, Lawrence, Goff, and Shough are all clearing 3x value without cracking 12% owned anywhere, and Josh Allen's the extreme version, a top-4 arm on both sites owned like a punt (under 2%).
Top NFL DFS Leverage Plays
The simplest way to think about leverage this week: find two guys at a similar salary projected for about the same points, then check ownership. If one's rostered twice as much as the other, the cheaper-owned guy is your leverage play, same price, same expected points, way less company.
| Higher-Owned (A) | Sal | Own% | Leverage Play (B) | Sal | Own% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saquon Barkley (RB, DK) | $6,900 | 19.4% | Ashton Jeanty | $6,600 | 10.4% |
| Chris Olave (WR, DK) | $6,700 | 25.6% | Justin Jefferson | $7,300 | 13.5% |
| Zay Flowers (WR, DK) | $6,400 | 16.9% | Christian Watson | $5,900 | 4.3% |
| Luther Burden (WR, DK) | $5,500 | 10.8% | Rome Odunze | $5,400 | 0.9% |
| Ladd McConkey (WR, FD) | $6,500 | 23.2% | Parker Washington | $6,600 | 7.8% |
| Tennessee Titans (DST, FD) | $3,200 | 28.0% | New York Jets DST | $3,400 | 9.8% |
Being underowned because of a genuinely tough matchup isn't leverage, that's the field pricing risk correctly. James Cook and Drake London both look cheap on paper, but Cook's stuck with Houston's top-ranked defense, and London is down to a third string QB with Tua officially out, so it's Cooper Rush throwing him the ball against a Steelers front that sacked Tua four times last meeting. Leave both alone.
Jeanty off Barkley is the cleanest pivot on the board, $300 cheaper and nine points lower owned on DraftKings for a near-identical projection. Watson off Flowers/McConkey is the same idea at receiver in a genuinely good matchup. Rome Odunze is $100 cheaper than his own teammate Luther Burden, who the field still prefers by a wide margin even though Odunze projects fine on his own. And leverage shows up just by switching sites too: the Titans are a top-10 overall play on FanDuel but nowhere near that on DraftKings, and the Jaguars run the exact opposite pattern.
Best Contrarian NFL DFS Plays
If you want to actually separate from the field in a tournament, stack pieces together nobody's touching instead of throwing in one random punt.
- The Commanders side of Washington-Eagles: Daniels, Diggs, and the Croskey-Merritt/White backfield are all sitting in the low single digits combined, even with a real total and Washington only a short home dog. Everyone's piling into Barkley, so building this side instead is the clearest contrarian stack on the slate.
- Goff and Detroit's pass catchers as a bring-back to the Gibbs chalk, pairing him with an under-owned piece like Sam LaPorta gets you out of a pure run-game build without leaving the game environment.
- Fade the Jaguars DST on DraftKings for the Chargers or Texans instead, both facing rookie or backup-caliber quarterbacks, so the sack and turnover upside is real without the field overlap.
- A Vikings mini-stack around Justin Jefferson paired with Jordan Addison or the cheap side of that backfield, one of the tighter lines on the slate, and the field hasn't settled on the second piece yet.
Best GPP Plays Based on Ownership
Easiest way to build a lineup that stands out this week: anchor it with one or two chalk plays that earned their ownership, then fill around them with names from the low-owned and leverage tables.
- Chalk anchor: Gibbs or Chase, both earn the ownership on pure volume.
- Leverage pivot: Jeanty off Barkley, or Watson off the Flowers/McConkey price point. Or go cross-site with the Titans DST on FanDuel and the Jaguars DST on DraftKings.
- Low-owned game stack: Daniels/Diggs/Croskey-Merritt out of Commanders-Eagles, basically zero-owned in a game where both sides can score.
- Value at the bottom of the lineup: Devaughn Vele ($3,500 DK, 16.0% DK own), cash-game-safe salary relief with real tournament equity in the Saints-Lions stack.
Treat all of this as a projection, not a promise. Ownership shifts fast as news breaks, so give it one more look before your rosters lock, especially for anyone who pops up on the injury report between now and kickoff.
