The Charlotte Hornets played the Cleveland Cavaliers tough yesterday. They held the high-scoring Cavaliers to under 100 points, and they outscored the Cavaliers 55 - 38 in the second half. However, the Hornets only scored 32 combined points in the first half, and they were unable to cover the +3.5 spread due to it.

Pascal Siakam far exceeded his rebounding line of 6.5 against the Boston Celtics. So much so that he earned a double-double. He led the Indiana Pacers in both points and rebounds, and he successfully cashed our best bet. Giannis Antetokounmpo took his second field goal ATTEMPT with 3:00 remaining in the second quarter. The over on his points was doomed due to this low volume of attempts. He had just 7 points at halftime and 17 at the end of the game. Well below the 28 points that were needed.

There are eight games today, two of which are nationally televised on Amazon Prime Video. One of those games does feature a best bet that we discuss later. However, it’s an Eastern versus Western conference battle, which is not nationally televised, that gets the first best bet of today. And it’s a double-unit hammer.

NBA Best Bets Today, 1/22: Picks, Predictions & Player Props - Thursday

Houston Rockets vs Philadelphia 76ers: Thursday 1/22

Game Time: 7:00 PM ET | TV: NBA League Pass | Location: Xfinity Mobile Arena | Odds: HOU -2.5 | O/U 221.5

The Philadelphia 76ers host the Houston Rockets in a match that is not nationally televised, but could be the game of the day. There is a starting all-star player on the court, and he is not Kevin Durant. It is the young, rising star Tyrese Maxey. It’s a deserving honor, and he is the most electrifying player for the 76ers. He will contribute in more ways than one to tonight’s total.

The total of this match is set at 221.5 points, and that seems far too low. This is going to be a back-and-forth match with talent loaded on each side. VJ Edgecombe, Paul George, Joel Embiid, and the return of Kelly Oubre make the 76ers one of the most offensive and talented teams in the Association.

Houston has pushed the pace and has one of the best scorers all-time in Kevin Durant. They are having issues finding consistent scorers outside of Amen Thomphson, but the return of Dorian Finney-Smith has provided some good three-point scoring. Houston averages 117.0 points per game, and Philadelphia averages 116.5 points per game. Combined, that is 233.5 points, which is 12 higher than the set total. It’s an easy best bet with data on its side, and two units is the suggestion.

Los Angeles Lakers vs Los Angeles Clippers: Thursday 1/22

Game Time: 10:00 PM ET | TV: Amazon Prime Video | Location: Intuit Dome | Odds: LAC -1.5 | O/U 223.5

The Battle of Los Angeles is on, and this time it isn’t a weather balloon believed to be a foreign enemy attacking. This one takes place at the Intuit Dome, as the Los Angeles Clippers host the Los Angeles Lakers. It is expected to be a battle with differing opinions on the outcome, depending on the sportsbook.

The Clippers are surging, and the Lakers are up and down, just as they have been all season. LeBron James and Luka Doncic are playing together as a unit, but inconsistencies in their frontcourt can be an issue for reliable scoring. Doncic is constantly foul-baiting while vocalizing anything that does not go his way. Depending on the official, that can backfire. He did receive a technical in their most recent game due to talking to the officials.

However, this best bet is more about the Los Angeles Clippers, who have really made a push to save their season. They have moved back into the play-in, currently in tenth place of the Western Conference. They have a winning record at home, 11 - 9, and even without Kawhi Leonard, the expectation is for them to win today’s match. Put a unit on it.

NBA Prop Bet Today, 1/22

Jonathan Kuminga played his first game in over a month on January 20th. It wasn’t due to injury, as there is something odd and unusual about how Kuminga is being managed. Jimmy Butler’s fluke ACL tear has forced Steve Kerr to give Kuminga playing minutes. And the expectation is for that to continue today.

Betting on a player who has played 20 minutes in 34 days is always a gamble. The inverse of that is his lines are low, and his odds are high. That is something we are going to take advantage of as well. His rebounding line of 4.5 has positive odds on the over, and it is the third best bet of today.

Kuminga earned 5 rebounds against the Toronto Raptors, and has an average of 6.1 rebounds per game this season. The Golden State Warriors have Draymond Green (age 35) and Al Horford (age 39) as their front-court players. They were once great rebounders, but are not the players they once were. Even if they start, they can not play the entire game.

Daniel Gafford and P.J Washington are formidable rebounders for the Dallas Mavericks, but Kuminga is more athletic than both of them. He should easily outrebound his opponents… if he gets to play. Put a unit on this best bet, as the expectation is he will play around 20 minutes once again today.
