Alvarez is a certified professional hitter, and this matchup is phenomenal. He has a 1.169 OPS and .350 ISO when playing at home this year, and a right-handed pitcher hates to see Alvarez step into the batter’s box. On the year, the Houston slugger has a .336 AVG, 1.131 OPS, .336 ISO, and .466 wOBA! The numbers jump off the page, and the righty he’s taking on today just so happens to have major, major problems with left-handed hitters.

Janson Junk has allowed lefties to hit at .315 clip with a .494 SLG and .369 wOBA. His four primary pitches against lefties have all allowed a batting average of at least .284, including his changeup and curveball being bludgeoned at a .346 clip and .333 clip, respectively. If Junk wants to try Alvarez with non-fastballs, I wish him the best, as Alvarez has an .818 SLG against “breaking” stuff, per Baseball Savant, and a .344 average against “offspeed” stuff, per Baseball Savant.

I’d be comfortable playing Alvarez over 2.5 hits + runs + RBI, but of course, always determine your own level of risk.

It’s only been 31 games for Valdez, but it’s been a whole bunch of fun. Sure, his 37.3 K% is far from ideal, but look at that .305 average, .733 SLG, and .429 ISO! However, in regard to why we like Valdez today, his strikeout rate sits at just 25% against lefties on the season. Oh, he also has a .371 average, 1.507 OPS, and .686 ISO against southpaws thus far in his big league career. 

Since June 1, Ryan Weathers has a 5.35 ERA, and across those seven starts, right-handed hitters have a .284 BAA, .451 SLG, and .338 wOBA against him.

Lastly, during Valdez’s seven-game hit streak, he’s hitting .333 with a 1.074 SLG, and he’s surpassed this 1.5 hits+runs+RBI line in all seven of those contests.
