Blue Jays vs. Yankees Prediction: Tuesday, May 19th

Let’s lead off the MLB best bets today with an AL East showdown. Scoring could be at a premium as the New York Yankees host the Toronto Blue Jays. The unders for both the full game and the first five innings are the focus here. 

Dylan Cease will look to continue his strong season as he gets the start for Toronto. The right-hander has a 2.41 ERA with 2 earned runs or fewer allowed in 7 of his 9 outings. His 1.85 FIP and 2.89 xERA are very encouraging that he can keep this going. Plus, Cease boasts a career-high 34.6% strikeout rate (97th MLB percentile) with a career-low 4.2% barrel rate (84th percentile). 

The Blue Jays’ starter will now face an offense that’s struggled mightily against right-handed pitching lately. Over the past two weeks in the split, the Yankees have a .262 wOBA (29th in MLB) and 64 wRC+ (28th). Plus, their .177 batting average and 28.5% strikeout rate vs. righties during this stretch are both last in the majors. 

Yankees’ starter Will Warren can also limit the Toronto lineup. The right-hander has a solid 3.42 ERA this year, but that number is elevated due to one bad outing. He’s allowed 2 earned runs or fewer in 8 of 9 starts, with a 3.07 FIP and 2.83 xFIP. Plus, Warren’s 4.92 K/BB ratio ranks 9th among all qualified MLB starters this season. 

As for the Blue Jays, they’ve had issues against right-handed pitching all year and recently as well. They have a .304 wOBA vs. righties overall this season (26th in MLB). Over the past week in the split, Toronto has a .183 batting average (28th) and .248 wOBA (29th). The Jays also have one of the worst road offenses this year, with a .289 wOBA and 81 wRC+ (both 27th in the majors). 

Guardians vs. Tigers Prediction: Tuesday, May 19th

Ahead of Tuesday’s matchup, the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers have been heading in opposite directions. The Tigers are just 2-11 over their past 13 games, while the Guardians are 9-3 in their last 12 contests. 

Cleveland took the series opener on Monday with an 8-2 victory. Let’s count on those trends continuing tonight as the AL Central rivals face off again. The Guardians hold a few notable edges to get it done. 

Cleveland starter Parker Messick is having an All-Star season thus far. The left-hander boasts a 2.35 ERA and 0.99 WHIP over his first 9 starts. He’s also allowed 2 runs or fewer in 7 of his 9 outings. The underlying stats are very impressive as well, including a 28.3% strikeout rate (84th MLB percentile), 31.1% hard-hit rate allowed (87th), 6.8% walk rate (77th), and 34.9% chase rate (86th). 

Messick now faces a Detroit offense that’s struggled to hit left-handed pitching lately. The Tigers have a .198 batting average with a 27.8% strikeout rate vs. lefties over the past two weeks. Plus, they’re hitting just .217 against southpaws overall this season, which ranks 26th in the majors. 

On the other side, the Guardians can get to Tigers starter Keider Montero. He has a decent 3.65 ERA this year, but the advanced stats tell a different story. The right-hander has allowed a 44.0% hard-hit rate (25th MLB percentile) and a 10.5% barrel rate (21st). Plus, his 17.7% strikeout rate (21st percentile) and 17.5% whiff rate (7th) leave a lot to be desired. 

Montero’s style of pitching to contact can be a problem against Cleveland. Over the past two weeks, the Guardians’ 16.9% strikeout rate and 15.0% walk rate vs. righties both lead the league. They also have a .383 wOBA and 146 wRC+ in the split over the past week, which rank 2nd-best in the MLB. 

Let’s back Cleveland to get the win and lead after five innings. Messick is the better pitcher to back in this matchup, and the Guardians’ offense is much more trustworthy as well. Both teams’ recent forms can also not be ignored, as noted above.
