Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets Predictions: Monday, August 25th

The biggest divisional matchup tonight features the Philadelphia Phillies against the New York Mets. These NL East rivals are currently separated by 7 games in the standings heading into this series opener. Let’s break down Monday’s game as the Mets try to make up ground on the Phillies.

Cristopher Sanchez starts for Philadelphia, which is usually a good thing. The left-hander is having a Cy Young-caliber season with a 2.46 ERA and 2.63 FIP. He’s especially been dealing lately with a 1.86 ERA over his past 11 starts. He’s also allowed fewer than 2 runs in 8 of his last 11 outings.

Sanchez is in elite form right now, and he’s quickly emerged as the Phillies’ ace with Zack Wheeler out for the season. The southpaw should be up for this road matchup. He owns a 2.54 ERA and 2.64 FIP on the road this year. That includes a 2.30 ERA over his past 7 road starts.

As Sanchez does his thing, the Philly offense should provide run support. The Phillies are averaging 7.8 runs per game over the past 7 games. It’s a hot lineup right now. They’re also crushing right-handed pitching over the past week, with a .442 wOBA, .374 BA, 187 wRC+, and 1.043 OPS (all 1st in MLB).

It’s a tough spot for Mets starter Kodai Senga. The righty has an impressive 2.58 ERA this season, but the regression monster looms. Senga’s 4.08 FIP, 4.31 xFIP, and 3.88 xERA are all notably higher. Plus, we’ve seen some shakier starts lately, as he’s posted a 6.00 ERA over his past 6 starts.

Even as road favorites tonight, there’s some good value on the Phillies to begin this series with a win. Sanchez is the better pitcher to back right now, and the Philadelphia offense is rolling.

Cincinnati Reds vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Predictions: Monday, August 25th

The Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers start up a crucial three-game set on Monday night. Both teams are fighting for positioning in the National League playoff picture. It should be a fun series, so let’s get some action on tonight’s matchup.

The Dodgers are currently tied atop the NL West with the Padres heading into this week. Meanwhile, the Reds are just 1.5 games back of the third NL Wild Card spot. There are plenty of playoff implications involved as these squads face off.

Hunter Greene will start for Cincinnati tonight. The hard-throwing right-hander has a 2.63 ERA and 0.93 WHIP over 13 starts this season. He’s looked good since returning from the IL, tossing 6 shutout innings against the Phillies and then striking out 12 against the Angels. He also now boasts a 2.55 ERA over his past 7 starts.

A road matchup against the Dodgers is certainly tough, but Greene should be up for the task. His 32.2% strikeout rate (93rd percentile), 4.9% walk rate (94th), .205 xBA (92nd), and 2.75 xERA (94th) are all elite advanced metrics. Plus, Greene was effective in two starts vs. the Dodgers last year. Over 12.1 combined innings, he allowed 3 runs with 13 strikeouts.

On the other side, LA starter Emmet Sheehan can hold his own as well. The righty has been up and down this season with a 4.17 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. Although the results have been shaky, he’s still allowed 2 or fewer earned runs in 4 of his 7 starts this year.

Sheehan has also had to pitch on the road for 5 of his past 7 outings. Now he’s at home, where he owns a 3.05 FIP this season. Plus, behind Sheehan is a Dodgers bullpen that’s been a lot better recently. Over the past week, the pen has had an MLB-best 2.99 FIP.

Let’s take the under for the full game. This should be an intense series opener as both Cincy and LA look to start out with a victory.
