MLB Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 8/12

Phillies vs. Reds Predictions

The Phillies are on the road today against the Reds after winning the first game in the series yesterday, 4-1, in yet another great pitching performance from the team. Tonight, we could see the same with Ranger Suarez on the mound, although he’s struggled a bit this summer, so things could get spicy on the offensive front with him facing Brady Singer.

Between Suarez and Singer, both have been below average since the start of July, with Suarez allowing 19 earned runs in his last 35 innings pitching and 41 total hits! Singer hasn’t been any better, allowing 19 earned runs in the last 33.2 innings pitched and has surrendered 35 hits and 4 home runs. Seems to me the offenses are going to explode tonight in the Great American Ballpark, which has the 2nd highest ballpark factor when it comes to home runs over the past 3 years. Over 9 runs is the move here for me!

In addition to that, I like the matchup for the lefties against Singer tonight in the Phillies lineup. His opposing batting average is creeping up into the .270 range, and the OPS is firmly in the .800s. That means the big bat of Kyle Schwarber could awaken again as he’s hitting with an OPS of .942 against right-handed pitchers this season. Give me him to go over his hits/runs/RBIs tonight at 2.5 and don’t be surprised if he goes yard as well.

Cubs vs. Blue Jays Predictions

It's an interleague series kicking off today between the Cubs and Blue Jays, and with both teams looking to continue their push to the playoffs, this should be a fun few games between them! Big time pitching issues today on the bump though, so let’s dive into it.

Ben Brown will go out there for the Cubs today, and he’s been no good pretty much all season long, but especially from June to now! Over the course of his last 7 starts and 35.2 innings pitched, he’s given up 26 earned runs, 42 hits, and has walked 16 batters. This is tough news for Brown as the Blue Jays' offense this summer has been as good as they come with a team isolated power mark of .201, the 3rd best in MLB, and a .331 BABIP since July 1st. The Cubs man on the bump is in for a world of hurt tonight.

On the other side, the Blue Jays are sending out Jose Berrios, and normally, he’s a stud, but not lately, with an ERA well over 5 in the last 7 starts, he’s not been pitching well at all. 42 hits over the past 34.2 innings pitched and just 27 strikeouts during that time have not been helping the cause either. On account of both pitchers, I see this one being a barn burner, so give me the over in this game at 9 runs.

In addition to the over, let’s get a player prop in here to help us get there! Addison Barger has been on a tear for the Jays over the past 7 days, hitting .375 with a 1.103 OPS that includes 2 home runs and 6 RBIs! He should slice up Brown of the Cubs tonight as he’s allowing a .291 average and .899 OPS to lefties this season, so let’s hit up the over on the Hits/Runs/RBIs prop for the 3rd baseman tonight.
