Daniel Palencia’s 2025 campaign was a masterclass in high-octane relief, as the hard-throwing right-hander transitioned from Triple-A depth to the Cubs' primary ninth-inning weapon. After a mid-April call-up, Palencia seized the closer role in May following struggles from Ryan Pressly and never looked back, finishing the year with a 2.91 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 22 saves across 54 appearances. His breakout was fueled by a significant improvement in command—dropping his walk rate from nearly 14% to a manageable 7.4%—and elite velocity that averaged 99.6 mph (98th percentile). Entering 2026, Palencia has been officially named the Cubs' Opening Day closer by manager Craig Counsell.
