2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: Across seven starts for the Cubs last year, the young southpaw posted a 4-1 record with a 4.41 ERA (4.70 FIP) with a 1.27 WHIP and 7.5 percent walk rate. Compared to his numbers in the minors, his strikeout rate at the MLB level (16.3%) was very underwhelming, despite having three pitches last year post a whiff rate of at least 26 percent. 

2024 Outlook: In 2024, I expect Wicks to attack the zone more, and if leans into his changeup and non-fastball offerings a bit more, his strikeout rate should surpass 20 percent this year, while maintain a solid walk rate. He's a solid young prospect to keep an eye on, and after logging 126 IP across three levels last season, he's equipped to handle 150+ IP in 2024. If he can maintain a solid ground ball rate while bumping up his strikeout rate, he's an enticing late round flier in deeper formats.
