2023 Player Outlook
2023 Recap: Overall, King did a bit of everything for the Yankees last season, winning four games, posting six saves, eight holds, and a 2.75 ERA across 104.2 IP. However, what he did down the stretch is most notable and relevant for his 2024 fantasy value. He joined the team's starting rotation for good near the end of August, and across those eight starts to end the season, he posted a 1.88 ERA (2.47 FIP), 1.10 WHIP, 31.4 percent strikeout rate, and 5.9 percent walk rate. From August 24th on, he posted the seventh-best ERA, eighth-best strikeout rate, and sixth-best K-BB%. All of that to say, King was elite down the stretch, and he'll now go to San Diego, a pitcher friendly park, and sizable upgrade compared to Yankee Stadium. King's sweeper and changeup both posted whiff rates of at least 39 percent last season, and his changeup is an elite weapon against left-handed hitters. When he faces righties, his sweeper generated a 42.2 percent whiff rate, and his sinker was a ground ball machine.
2024 Outlook: The righty hasn't worked as a full-time starter since 2018, which was also the last and only time he logged more than 150 IP in a season. Projecting his innings for 2024 is a bit tough but seeing as he last year's 104.2 IP was his highest in a year since 2018, I can't imagine the Padres push him too much past 140 IP in 2024. However, in a good pitcher's park and an even better pitch mix, King is an intriguing third or fourth starter in fantasy this season, as he has shown to be above average in terms of missing bats and avoiding walks, and that stretch run in 2023 was incredibly impressive. However, there is some risk, given that he made just nine starts last season, has 19 total starts in the MLB, and they likely manage his workload at some point.
