2024 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: After injuries impacted his past three seasons, a healthy Merryweather was a massive boost to Chicago's bullpen. On top of posting a 5-1 record with two saves and 17 holds, Merryweather posted a 3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 32.3 percent strikeout rate. A lofty 15.4 percent swinging strike rate and miniscule 67.4 percent contact rate benefitted Merryweather greatly. He has excellent top-end velocity, and his 95th percentile whiff rate aided his 96th percentile strikeout rate. Merryweather is prone to allowing some hard contact, but an elite slider and an effective changeup give him two legitimate put-away pitches. His home/road splits made him out to be two different pitchers in terms of his ERA, but the strikeouts followed regardless of the venue.

2024 Outlook: Adbert Alzolay and Hector Neris seem to be the first two options for saves in the Chicago bullpen, but Merryweather should rack up holds and be an important piece to the team's bullpen. Outside of NL-only leagues that value holds, Merryweather is largely undraftable, but could be a midseason free agency pickup if he can work into a more prominent role and stay healthy.
