Nebraska vs. Illinois Prediction: Friday, November 6th

Let’s kick off our CFB best bets today with the Big Ten showdown between Illinois and Nebraska. Both teams enter the matchup at 5-3, but they’ve been heading in very different directions recently. Illinois has won three straight, while Nebraska has lost three in a row. Despite those trends, the Cornhuskers are worth backing as road favorites tonight.

Illinois is an ideal sell-high team, even amid the three-game winning streak. While the Fighting Illini have managed to string together victories, they haven’t exactly been convincing. Plus, a closer look at the results and opponents is worth taking.

The Illini needed a last-second field goal to get past Maryland last week. They previously scraped by Michigan State in overtime. Both opponents are 2-6 and have lost six straight games apiece. Illinois also caught a break when they faced Oregon without star quarterback Dante Moore.

Nebraska, on the other hand, looks like a solid buy-low opportunity despite its recent losing streak. The Cornhuskers have dropped three straight after opening the season 5-0, but those defeats have been close. They held fourth-quarter leads in all three games, with each loss coming by a single score. Nebraska also out-gained both Indiana and Washington in those matchups.

Defense could ultimately decide this week’s matchup, which favors Nebraska. The Cornhuskers rank 8th nationally in total defense while allowing just 15.6 points per game (14th in FBS). They’re also among the nation’s top 10 in both defensive success rate and defensive EPA/Play.

Conversely, Illinois has struggled defensively. The Fighting Illini rank 127th in defensive EPA/Play and 123rd in defensive success rate. Those deficiencies should give Nebraska’s offense plenty of opportunities to capitalize. The Cornhuskers are the pick to cover the spread.

South Florida vs. East Carolina Prediction: Friday, November 6th

Let’s now turn our attention to an AAC matchup as East Carolina hosts South Florida. Though the game total is already set low, our CFB best bets today still call for the under. Both defenses can control the pace and keep this matchup low-scoring.

South Florida enters with one of the better defenses in the country, giving up just 14.5 points per game (10th in FBS). The Bulls rank 10th nationally in defensive EPA/Play, 13th in defensive success rate, and 24th in total yards allowed per game. They’ve also held opponents to 17 points or fewer in 6 of 8 games this season.

East Carolina boasts a solid defense of its own. The Pirates rank 24th in defensive success rate and 37th in defensive EPA/Play. They’re coming off an impressive home performance against Temple, limiting the Owls to just 9 points and 249 total yards last week. ECU also held Rice to 12 points and 233 total yards at home earlier in conference play.

ECU has been particularly effective at stopping the run, ranking 30th nationally in yards per carry allowed and 26th in EPA/Rush. That could create problems for a South Florida offense that relies on its run game. The Bulls also have uncertainty at quarterback, as starter Michael Van Buren Jr. could miss the contest after leaving last week’s game with an injury.

Meanwhile, East Carolina’s offense provides little reason for optimism. The Pirates rank 125th in offensive EPA/Play and 126th in offensive success rate. They’ve struggled against some of the stronger defenses in the AAC, and South Florida might be the best unit.

Points should be hard to come by on both sides tonight. Expect the ECU and USF defenses to set the tone and hold firm. Recent betting trends also support a low-scoring game. The under is 4-1 in South Florida’s last 5 games, and 6-2 in East Carolina’s games overall this season.
