2022 Player Outlook
In an era where stolen bases are at a premium, there were high hopes for Mercado who went four-straight minor league seasons with at least 30 stolen bases and provided steady growth with regard to his on-base work. However, after a solid 15-15 big-league debut in 2019, Mercado has fallen off the radar with two very underwhelming seasons. Almost everyone is getting a pass on the 2020 season, but not only did Mercado fail to secure a starting job out of spring training last year, but when he did see time with the big club, his performance left little to be desired. The Guardians aren't exactly flush with outfield talent heading into 2022, so unless they make a bigger splash in free agency, Mercado could get the chance to start the season in left field. His speed upside will always get him a longer look, but if he doesn't pick up the average and on-base percentage, he's not going to have much in the way of fantasy value.
