2022 Player Outlook
Manaea went 11-10 with a 3.91 ERA across a career-high 179.1 innings with a pristine 5.4 percent walk rate. Manaea has always had impressive command, and it was nice to see the strikeouts return in 2021, posting a 25.7 percent strikeout rate, which was the second-best mark of his career. In terms of his arsenal, he scrapped his slider in 2021, and enjoyed increased whiff rates (compared to 2020) on each of his three primary pitches (sinker, changeup, and curveball). The strikeouts are big for Manaea, as that pushes him up in the next tier of fantasy starters. He does a decent job of keeping the ball on the ground, and his low walk rate keeps him out of self-inflicted blowups. If he can continue to generate whiffs, and strikeout over one batter inning, he becomes much more enticing at his current draft price, and the switch to San Diego provides a better situation around him.
