2022 Player Outlook
Through his first 46 appearances of the season, Barnes was one of baseball’s best closers, saving 24 games and posting a 2.40 ERA. However, from August 8th through the end of the season Barnes appeared in 14 games, pitched to a 10.24 ERA and lost his closers gig. Up until August 8th opposing hitters had a .162 combined BAA Barnes’ fastball and curveball. From August 8th through the end of the season opposing hitters had a .356 combined BAA his fastball and curveball. Barnes’ late season swoon corresponds to a decrease in the velocity of his pitches. From August 8th through the end of the season Barnes lost more than a mph off his fastball, and just under a mph off his curveball. Whether or not Barnes can regain his role as the Red Sox closer depends on several factors including his spring training performance, but he’s like to have a significant role in their bullpen this season.
