2022 Player Outlook

Diekman needs to keep the ball on the ground. His 1.48 HR/9 was a career worst for the veteran southpaw, and it's no surprise when he consider that last year's 26.3 percent ground ball rate was the first time in the past half-decade that it has dropped below 48 percent! He has a sinking fastball, but it didn't live in the bottom of the zone where it needs to be, so further refinement and placement of that pitch should help immensely. He's better against righties than lefties, and despite going 7-for-14 in save chances last season, he could work his way into some save chances for Boston in 2022. However, that will not happen unless he keeps the ball out of the air, as he allows more hard contact than one would like.
