2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: Tarik Skubal returned from flexor tendon surgery on July 4th last year and turned in a Cy Young like performance in the second half of the season as his average fastball velocity spiked from 94.2 to 95.8 mph. He ended with a 7-3 record and 2.80 ERA/0.90 WHIP to go along with 102 strikeouts and 14 walks over 80.1 innings pitched.

2024 Outlook: Yes, it was only 80 innings so there is still some uncertainty, but Tarik Skubal is already one of the best 15 starters in MLB. In the past two seasons, only six left-handed starters have been more valuable than Tarik Skubal in terms of FanGraphs’ version of Wins Above Replacement and as the Tigers put pressure on the Twins and Guardians in the AL Central, he has a chance to truly make himself one of the best left-handers in the game.
