Padres signed RHP Mike Clevinger to a two-year, $11.5 million contract extension.
In the same press release announcing the contract, the Padres also revealed that Clevinger is scheduled to undergo Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on Tuesday, November 17 and will miss the entire 2021 season. Clevinger was already under the Padres' control through 2022, so this new deal really just serves to set his price in arbitration each of the next two years -- the first of which will be spent rehabbing. The 29-year-old right-hander battled an elbow issue down the stretch in 2020, which limited him to just one inning of work in the postseason, but the hope had been that he would be able to avoid a major operation this winter.
