Javier Baez told reporters on Friday that his preference is to sign a long-term extension with the Cubs.

Baez -- who is set to hit free agency at season's end -- did say that he would "probably" put a deadline on negotiations during the spring as he doesn't want the contract to become a distraction during the regular season. The 28-year-old shortstop is coming off of a miserable 2020 season where he slashed just .203/.238/.360 with eight homers, 24 RBI and a 75/7 K/BB ratio across 235 plate appearances.

Dan Hayes of The Athletic believes that Alex Kirilloff will make the Twins Opening Day roster will a strong showing during Spring Training.

Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said recently that his main goal is to bring forward the best team that he can -- regardless of service time considerations. That means the 23-year-old top prospect -- who has never played a regular season game above Double-A -- could wind up as the club's everyday left fielder in 2021. The Twins were confident enough in Kirilloff's readiness, that they opted to non-tender Eddie Rosario over the winter, so expect to see him spend the majority of his time in Minneapolis during the 2021 campaign.

Domingo German faced live hitters for the first time in spring camp on Friday -- throwing 20 pitches in a live batting practice session.

German looked "sharp" according to Yankees' skipper Aaron Boone. The 28-year-old hurler privately addressed his teammates this week -- apologizing for his domestic violence incident at a charity event in September 2019. He is still seemingly on thin ice -- both with his teammates and with the Yankees' organization -- though he still has an opportunity to solidify a spot in the club's Opening Day rotation with a strong showing in the spring. German went 18-4 with a 4.03 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 153/39 K/BB ratio over 143 innings when we last saw him during the 2019 season.

Rangers manager Chris Woodward said Friday that Rougned Odor is working out at third base and is in the mix to earn the starting job there.

Odor's ineptitude at the plate has allowed Nick Solak to seize the starting gig at second base, but there's still an opening at the hot corner if he has a strong spring. His primary competition for the job comes from a pair of veteran utility players in Charlie Culberson and Brock Holt. Odor -- who has been a fixture at second base for the Rangers since 2014 -- hasn't played at third base aside from his time with Venezuela during the 2017 World Baseball Classic. Over the last two seasons Odor has slashed a cringe-inducing .197/.268/.433, though it has come with 40 homers and 11 stolen bases.

Mark Canha is one of the names being considered to hit leadoff for the Athletics in 2021.

Canha admitted recently that he hasn't hit leadoff since high school, but that he was confident that he could handle it. The 32-year-old had a bit of a down year at the dish in 2020, but still posted a .387 on-base percentage which would play well atop the lineup. His fantasy outlook would be greatly boosted -- particularly in the runs scored category -- if he indeed finds himself atop the lineup on an everyday basis.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said this week that getting a long look at Luis Urias at shortstop during spring training is "something we want to do."

Urias was set to compete for the shortstop job in 2020, but he missed spring training because of a broken hamate bone and then tested positive for COVID-19 at the start of summer camp. He then mostly played third base when he was healthy because the Brewers needed help at the position. Now, it sounds like he might be the favorite to start at shortstop over Orlando Arcia. Urias has posted a lackluster .635 OPS over 422 career plate appearances at the major league level, but the former top prospect has some offensive upside. Arcia, meanwhile, is expected to play some third base and center field this spring in addition to shortstop.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for waivers claim Jordan Humphreys. Beede will be sidelined until around midseason while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
