WNBA DFS Playbook August 9: Top DraftKings & FanDuel WNBA DFS Picks
With just six days left in the WNBA regular season, 11 of the 12 teams are within one game of the final playoff spot. That means we don’t have to worry about which players will get rested or get their minutes cut nearly as much as we usually do this time of year. That is especially true of Tuesday’s slate. Las Vegas is one game ahead of Connecticut for the two-seed. Their opponents, Atlanta and Los Angeles need every win they can get as they try to secure one of the last two playoff spots. The Sky would clinch the number one seed with a win and an Aces loss, while a Seattle win would put them a full game ahead of Washington for the fourth seed and home-court advantage in the first round.
GUARDS
Player | Team | Opp. | DK $ | DK FPPG | FD $ | FD FPPG |
Aari McDonald | ATL | LV | 7100 | 20.14 | 5800 | 19.92 |
McDonald played 28 minutes and scored 24 fantasy points Sunday. Maya Caldwell is probably a better value, but McDonald has been very good this season when given the opportunity. She averaged 22.9 fantasy points and 23.5 minutes in two games against Las Vegas this season.
Maya Caldwell | ATL | LV | 6000 | 18.83 | 4400 | 17.95 |
Caldwell hasn't been quite as consistent as I would like, but she played 31 minutes Sunday and she is averaging 23.1 fantasy points in three games with Atlanta. Her playing time should be safe with Tiffany Hayes and Kristi Wallace out again.
Sue Bird | SEA | CHI | 7900 | 21.64 | 5000 | 20.80 |
It is certainly possible Bird turns into a pumpkin this week but with the end of the regular season in sight and the fourth seed in the playoffs on the line, I don't expect that to happen. Bird has played at least 26 minutes and scored at least 23 fantasy points in five straight games, and looks like a safe mid-priced guard.
Rhyne Howard | ATL | LV | 11000 | 30.91 | 8200 | 30.96 |
We are going right back to the well with three Atlanta guards, even though they were underwhelming Sunday. Even with that poor performance, Howard is averaging 37.9 fantasy points in her last four games and 34.9 fantasy points in two games against Las Vegas. She is pretty easy to afford on DraftKings and I am willing to pay up for her.
DeWanna Bonner | CON | LA | 8600 | 27.05 | 6300 | 26.83 |
None of the top guards on the slate appear to be bulletproof, so we may as well go with one of the cheapest. The Sparks are 11th out of 12 teams in fantasy points allowed to guards and Bonner is averaging 30.1 fantasy poitns in her last four games.
Player | Team | Opp. | DK $ | DK FPPG | FD $ | FD FPPG |
Odyssey Sims | CON | LA | 3800 | 16.12 | 4200 | 16.02 |
Sims was fantastic in her second game since signing a seven-day contract with Connecticut, scoring 21 fantasy points in 18 minutes Sunday. Sims isn't guaranteed similar minutes or production but I am willing to chase them at this price.
Jordin Canada | LA | CON | 7500 | 22.47 | 6000 | 22.60 |
Canada has at least eight assists in three straight games, averaging 27.5 fantasy points in that span. With Kristi Toliver out, Canada's role as the lead point guard seems secure. |
FORWARDS
Player | Team | Opp. | DK $ | DK FPPG | FD $ | FD FPPG |
Kiah Stokes | LV | ATL | 5800 | 10.26 | 4000 | 10.85 |
I don't really understand why Kiah Stokes is starting for Dearica Hamby, but Aces head coach Becky Hammon as said it will continue, so Stokes needs to be considered. She failed to scored a single point in 28 minutes Sunday but still finished with 19.75 fantasy points. If she can do that Tuesday, she will be a nice value play.
Olivia Nelson-Ododa | LA | CON | 6800 | 9.69 | 4600 | 10.18 |
Nelson-Ododa came back down to earth a bit Sunday but she is still averaging 22.6 fantasy points in her last four games. If Chiney Ogwumike is out again, Nelson-Ododa is a solid value play.
Alyssa Thomas | CON | LA | 11400 | 35.79 | 8400 | 35.04 |
Thomas was great in her only game against Los Angeles this season, though it is worth noting the game was in May before Connecticut got all of its players back from overseas. More importantly for our purposes, Thomas is averaging 40.8 fantasy points in her last four games. Minutes come and go for Connecticut's other forwards but Thomas has been consistent all season.
A'ja Wilson | LV | ATL | 11600 | 41.59 | 9100 | 42.04 |
I think Wilson is properly priced on FD, which makes her a bit of a value on DraftKings. She averaged 44.1 fantasy points in two games against Atlanta and she has at least 39 fantasy points in nine of her last 10 games.
Tina Charles | SEA | CHI | 9600 | 29.32 | 6600 | 28.39 |
I don't really trust Tina Charles, but at her price on FanDuel, we don't have to. He has at least 29 FD fantasy points in five of her last seven games, and she is certainly more trustable than the forwards priced below her.
Player | Team | Opp. | DK $ | DK FPPG | FD $ | FD FPPG |
Chiney Ogwumike | LA | CON | 8300 | 17.71 | 5000 | 17.42 |
I'm assuming that whenever she returns from her facial injury that Ogwumike will play her normal minutes. She averaged 26.2 fantasy points in her last six games before suffering the injury and she would be worth a shot if she is able to go. |
