These are very unique times we live in. We’re used to teams potentially resting starters for the final week of the season. But, with longer schedules now, the opportunity has arisen for teams to potentially rest starters in Week 17 as well, if conditions are right. And that might happen for this Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cleveland Browns game.

Mike Tomlin has revealed that the Steelers could rest some key starters this week if the Ravens lose to the Packers on Saturday night. That would see the Steelers clinch the division with no hope of getting a bye. And names that could be rested might include T.J. Watt and Aaron Rodgers. So we’ll need to consider that as we write this article here on Friday afternoon.

Steelers vs. Browns Predictions For Sunday 1:00 PM ET, NFL Week 17

This is a division game, so these teams naturally play fairly often. Earlier this year, the Steelers beat the Browns 23-9, though that was before the Shedeur Sanders era. The Steelers have won the last two matchups and four of the last six with the Browns, last winning 24-19 earlier last season.

The Browns are obviously eliminated from playoff contention at 3-12. Since Shedeur Sanders took over, they are 1-4 with their lone win coming against the Raiders, though they did play the Bills tough last week. The Steelers, on the other hand, are leading the division, having rattled off three straight wins. They are 9-6, having secured another winning season for Mike Tomlin, making it 19 straight for the head coach.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Possibly Resting Starters

The Steelers have embraced the unique style of Arthur Smith this year. It’s an approach that focuses heavily on blocking with multiple tight end sets and big split end DK Metcalf. They’ve deployed two versatile backs in Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell, who have both been effective when called upon. In the pass game, DK Metcalf has been the main focal point, though he’s been suspended for two games following an altercation with a fan.

On defense, the Steelers have been solid. At times, they looked like a team that was weak against the pass, but their DVOA rating over at FTN Fantasy, which attempts to account for game script and level of opponent, suggests that they are not as bad as the raw numbers say. They are obviously a better unit when TJ Watt is active, though he has battled injury at times.

Cleveland Browns: Life Without Quinshon Judkins

The Browns have leaned heavily on their rookies lately. Which is smart because, once you are eliminated from the playoffs, you should start focusing on the future. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders, tight end Harold Fannin, and running back Quinshon Judkins have been the focal points of this offense. Unfortunately, Judkins suffered a season-ending injury last week that could keep him out even early next season. And fellow rookie Dylan Sampson is dealing with hand and calf issues that may keep him out as well.

On defense, the Browns have been stout. The big story has obviously been Myles Garrett, who is chasing the all-time sack record.  He’s now one sack away from breaking the record, and the Browns seem set on making sure he gets every opportunity to do it.

Steelers vs. Browns: Cleveland Browns +3 (-105 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

I want to get some sort of action on the Cleveland Browns before the games tomorrow. I actually think the Cleveland Browns can beat the Pittsburgh Steelers at home outright. So I’m already willing to take them +3. Then you throw on top the chance that the Steelers could bench a bunch of key starters if the Ravens lose tomorrow? Lock that in for me now, and I’ll potentially hedge tomorrow if need be.

We’ve all seen and heard some things done in sports that might not exactly align with the spirit of the game. The Orioles sent out a knuckleball pitcher in the rain to prevent rival Yankees hitter Roger Maris from breaking the home run record. I’ve seen Mike Tomlin himself call another pass play when he could have taken a knee and ended a game to protect a meaningless record for Antonio Brown. If this game doesn’t mean anything at all in the standings, I would not at all be shocked to see Mike Tomlin bench starters, run the football heavily, and completely sandbag this game to prevent Myles Garrett from breaking TJ Watt’s sack record.

Maybe that’s bordering on conspiracy theories to some degree. But if the Ravens lose tomorrow, the game already doesn’t matter. So why not bet on the team that will likely be playing to win regardless? And they don’t even need to win - they just need to lose by less than three.
