Both teams have agreed not to play their starters this week. Which means we’ll get an interesting battle tonight among players hoping to claim roster spots - or even work their way back into the potential limelight. On the Cleveland Browns side, they named Deshaun Watson as the starting quarterback but are also opting to sit Shedeur Sanders, focusing on the QB3 battle between Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green. We know veterans like Harold Fannin and Jerry Jeudy, but it will be interesting to see if the Browns rest rookies KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston, as that gives us a good indication of how they are viewed on the depth chart.

On the Patriots side, all starters and anyone who is even remotely nicked up will rest. That not only means no Drake Maye, but a guy like TreVeyon Henderson, who reportedly could use the extra reps, will sit because of an existing ankle injury. Even after the Kayshon Boutte trade, there is a battle for WR depth spots among Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism. And it will be interesting to see if rookie tight end Eli Raridon plays tonight after getting a lot of buzz during camp.

🏅 Patriots vs. Browns Expert Pick: Patriots -2.5

It’s no secret that the Browns' quarterback play across the board has been atrocious this offseason. The fact that neither Deshaun Watson nor Shedeur Sanders could truly separate themselves has to be concerning. And it’s even worse for Dillon Gabriel, who was picked ahead of Shedeur Sanders but was leapfrogged on the depth chart. Taylen Green is a fun prospect, especially for fantasy football because of his mobility, but we expect to see a lot of mistakes tonight from a fairly raw talent. The Browns are so thin that I do expect them to rest their top rookie WRs, or at least play them sparingly.

The Patriots, on the other hand, have gotten great work out of backups Tommy DeVito and  Behren Morton. DeVito obviously has the most real game experience of any QB who will be playing tonight, and Morton executed a fairly impressive two-minute drill touchdown drive in the last preseason game. The acquisitions of A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs made the Patriots fairly deep all of a sudden at a position that was weak last year, so they still have horses for tonight’s game - last preseason, Efton Chism led the entire NFL in receptions across the three games. So we’re taking the Patriots backups to cover against the Browns tonight.

🏉 Patriots vs. Browns Injury Report & Latest News

Cleveland Browns: The Browns have made it clear both Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders will rest along with the other starters. Wide receiver Isaiah Bond will also be unlikely to go tonight after landing in concussion protocol against the Bills. Same goes for guys on the other side of the ball like Michael Coats and Carson Schwesinger, who are banged up.

New England Patriots: Most of the starters are resting, as well as anyone nicked up, like TreVeyon Henderson, as we mentioned earlier. The two most interesting players that we expect to play on each side of the ball will be Caleb Lomu and Gabe Jacas. Lomu was their first-round pick, and it’s still uncertain where he fits in the equation. Right now he’s expected to be the swing tackle who steps in if either Will Campbell or Morgan Moses go down, but if Marcus Bryant outshines him, he could be the backup LT to Campbell at least. With fellow rookie Gabe Jacas, he has missed a bit of a chunk of the preseason, which has led to inconsistency despite a couple of flashes when out there.
