The Jacksonville Jaguars have clinched a playoff spot. The worst they can do is one of the wildcard spots with their 11-4 record. But they have technically not yet clinched the AFC South. They are still battling with the 10-5 Houston Texans for that honor. So the games still matter for them.

The Colts' loss last week also technically did not end their playoff chances. They could still win out and, with a little help from other teams and “strength of schedule”, they could sneak their way in. But a loss this week ends all of that abruptly. This is a division game, so these teams naturally play fairly often. They’ve already played once this month, in fact, where the Jaguars beat the Colts 36-19. The Jaguars have now won four of the last five between these two, though the Colts did win 26-23 in overtime last January.

As we mentioned, the Jaguars currently lead the division. They are on a hot streak with six straight wins, the last loss coming against the Houston Texans in November. The Colts have not fared as well lately, with Philip Rivers losing both of his starts this year. That’s put them in their current position after a hot start. 

 

 

 

Jacksonville Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence Hitting Stride

When the Jaguars brought Liam Coen to town, there was one key objective. That was getting Trevor Lawrence to reach the heights he was projected to when taken with the first pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. Liam Coen got Baker Mayfield to play at his highest-ever level in Tampa Bay last year. And now Lawrence has done the same recently, with multiple touchdown passes in five straight. That includes a five-touchdown pass game against the New York Jets.

The Jaguars' defense has also been the best we’ve seen in years. DVOA over at FTN Fantasy currently ranks them as the 8th best defense overall and the fourth best against the run. They have a pretty well-rounded team that is catching stride at the most important time of the year here. 

Indianapolis Colts: Philip Rivers Simplified Offense

What they are asking Philip Rivers to do is insane. So I’m not surprised that they have simplified the offense to some degree. They are relying on the run game and a lot of quick passes from the super-veteran. Per Pro Football Focus, Rivers is getting the ball out of his hands in 2.41 seconds on average, which is easily the fastest of any starting quarterback this season.

On defense, the Colts have been about middle of the pack against the run and the pass. The secondary has had some injury issues, as Kenny Moore missed a good chunk of the season, and new acquisition Sauce Gardner has been dealing with a calf injury lately. The most recent news is that he’s practicing through the injury in an attempt to play.

Jaguars vs. Colts: Tyler Warren Over 5.5 Receptions (-105 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

Some folks might be surprised by how high this line is, given the recent down games for Warren. His receiving yard line is also set at 48.5, which is high for a tight end. Given the nature of the Colts' offense lately, we like the reception line more than the yards line. And we are willing to go over.

As we mentioned, Philip Rivers is getting the ball out quickly. That plays towards the routes that Tyler Warren and Josh Downs run. They each got 9 and 8 targets last week, respectively. Warren came very close to connecting on multiple plays last week, but he and Rivers were just not quite on the same page. I expect them to make more of those connections this week in a game that has a 48.5 over/under and some shootout potential.

On top of that, the weak spot for the Colts' defense has been the tight end (same is honestly true for the Colts, so this could be a decent tight end showdown). The Jaguars have allowed 92 receptions to the tight end position this year, which is a little over 6.1 a game. Warren has gotten 99 targets this year, or about 6.6 a game, while the next closest tight end on the team is Mo Alie-Cox with 13. The conditions here are pretty good for Tyler Warren to have a big game - and we’re willing to bet on that.
