Add that to all the highlights, fantasy football training camp updates, and injury reports; there was a lot to keep track of in terms of NFL training camp live news. Today is more of the same, with joint practices igniting a fire in different teams around the league and breaking news regarding one of the quarterback battles going on in NFL training camp, so without further ado, let’s dive into our NFL training camp report for today!
🏈 NFL Training Camp Live News - Joint Practices Begin
NFL Training Camp Joint Practices Begin
Nothing like bringing in some new competition to bring some intensity to NFL training camp. Several teams across the league held joint practices today, including the Jets and Buccaneers, the Patriots and Colts, the Cowboys and Rams, and the 49ers and Titans. These practices provided us with some highlight plays, player updates, and of course, some fights among the teams.
The practice between the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers went just about as anyone would expect. New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith struggled, throwing three interceptions fairly early in the practice. While Garrett Wilson was able to flash a bit on the offensive side of the ball, that was about all you could highlight for the Jets. A fight also occurred between the Jets defense and the Buccaneers offense, sparked by rookie pass rusher David Bailey. Cornerback Qwan'tez Stiggers also had to leave practice via ambulance.
New England Patriots vs. Indianapolis Colts practice was highlighted by a rep between A.J. Brown and Sauce Gardner.
George Pickens also had some highlight plays in the joint practice between the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams, making it known that their defensive additions do not faze him. Cowboys LB Justin Barron also had a big day, with three interceptions against the Rams quarterbacks.
Finally, the San Francisco 49ers vs. Tennessee Titans joint practice may have been the most physical of them all, with four fights occurring within the first ten minutes of practice. At least eight fights occurred overall. Just be sure to keep those skirmishes away from the electrical substation!
Kyler Murray Named Minnesota Vikings Starting Quarterback
We reported on this likely being the case last week (and expected it from the moment he was signed), but it is officially official; Kyler Murray has been named the starting quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings. Entering NFL training camp, Murray was in a battle for the QB1 role against the incumbent JJ McCarthy, but Murray had notably been getting the vast majority of reps with the first-team offense and flashed more overall upside that Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings were looking for.
This could be huge news for fantasy football, as Kyler Murray has had several top finishes in the past and McCarthy limited the upside for superstar receiver Justin Jefferson and the rest of the Vikings' pass catchers last season. Murray and the Vikings open their season against the Green Bay Packers on September 13th.
📈Fantasy Football Winners Of The Day
Derrick Henry to Get More Work
Reports from Baltimore Ravens training camp seem to indicate that the King still has plenty left in the tank. Entering his age-32 season, Derrick Henry is expected to continue to shoulder the majority of the work in the Baltimore Ravens' run game, along with getting more involved as a receiver, according to Offensive Coordinator Declan Doyle. While his age has been a concern for the past three years in fantasy football, he seems to defy Father Time every single year. Fade at your own risk.
It is also worth noting that fellow running backs Ashton Jeanty, James Cook, and Chase Brown are all reportedly getting more looks in the receiving game, with Brown even lining up in the slot for the Cincinnati Bengals. They are all worth a look in your fantasy football drafts and are all fantasy football training camp winners.
AJ Barner & Rashid Shaheed on the Rise
Two players have reportedly been the stars of Seattle Seahawks training camp, and it might not be who you expect.
Tight end AJ Barner has been an “ascending” player in the Seahawks offense according to reports as the Seahawks look for a secondary piece in the passing game behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Going as the TE24, he could be a massive draft-day value.
Rashid Shaheed has also been flashing at camp, with safety Julian Love noting that his “blinding speed” has been a problem for the defense to handle.
📉 Fantasy Football Losers Of The Day
Puka Nacua Could Face Suspension + Injury
Puka Nacua has regularly been appearing in the top eight picks of fantasy football drafts this season, but he could face a quick drop, as he could still be facing a suspension due to trouble he got into during the NFL offseason.
Additionally, Nacua had to leave practice early due to an undisclosed injury. Going as the WR2 in fantasy football drafts, Nacua is a clear fantasy football training camp loser.
Jadarian Price in a 2-3 Headed RB Committee
Early reports surrounding rookie running back Jadarian Price have been glowing from Seattle Seahawks training camp. It also helps that he was highlighted in HBO’s Hard Knocks series. That being said, many forget that he is a part of the Seattle Seahawks backfield; the same backfield that made it impossible to choose between starting Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet.
Head Coach Mike MacDonald is once again committing to a split backfield this season, which could heavily feature two to three different running backs in a given week. This sounds like a fantasy football nightmare.
🩼 NFL Training Camp Injury Updates - Nate Wiggins Carted Off the Field
When looking into an NFL training camp report, it is also important to stay up to date with all the injuries around the league and NFL Training Camp Live News. Beyond the Puka Nacua news, there is plenty more to cover below.
Nate Wiggins Carted Off the Field
2024 first-round pick Nate Wiggins suffered an apparent leg injury during Ravens training camp practice today. Head coach Jesse Minter did not have much information about the injury to his cornerback just yet, but he is “optimistic” as of right now. Something to continue to monitor.
Big Name Defenders Facing Injury
Puka Nacua’s injury is not the only one the Los Angeles Rams are currently facing. Newly acquired defensive end Myles Garrett sat out of joint practice today, as he is still dealing with swelling in his knee. While he is reportedly “85%” and does not expect any setbacks, it is still something to monitor as the Rams plan on making a serious postseason run.
Fellow defensive ends Cameron Jordan, Nick Bosa, and Jonathan Greenard are also dealing with injuries. Jordan, who is dealing with a hamstring injury, is at risk of missing the beginning of the season for the New Orleans Saints. Meanwhile, Bosa and Greenard are both considered week-to-week, as they work back from tendinitis and a pectoral strain, respectively.
Finally, the Chicago Bears took a big hit to their secondary, as what was originally expected to be a 6-8 week injury for safety Coby Bryant is now considered a 4-6 month recovery after Bryant just had knee surgery. The Bears are also facing question marks regarding the return of cornerback Kyler Gordon, who missed significant time last season.
Other Notable Injury Updates & Transactions
- Green Bay Packers RB Josh Jacobs is expected to be out for "at least this week" due to a groin injury.
- Indianapolis Colts WR Alec Pierce did NOT receive a second PRP injection this offseason on his injured ankle, despite reports saying otherwise.
- The Kansas City Chiefs signed DE Emmanuel Ogbah to a one-year deal.
- Philadelphia Eagles CB Jonathan Jones missed practice due to a shoulder injury.
- San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey missed practice again due to “tightness.”
