The San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets went over the projected total, but Victor Wembanyama did not earn over 10.5 rebounds. The Los Angeles Lakers did not play yesterday, but the Atlanta Hawks did. They were outscored by the Toronto Raptors in the second half, and moved to 1-3 at home. They were targeted in this column yesterday and they are a target once again. They are one of the worst home teams in the Association and have been for the past three seasons. The Lakers are a perfect 4-0 on the road this season and should move to 5-0 today. 

The Lakers have a better starting unit, the best player on the court, and are better rested. It’s tempting to tease the spread up, but at near even odds, -3.5 is the best bet. Although it’s just the third week in the NBA, there is enough data for more informed straight bets. Put a unit on this best bet today and expect the Lakers to win.

The Toronto Raptors are the team that was picked to win against the Atlanta Hawks yesterday. Today, they are playing their second of back-to-back road games against a high-scoring Philadelphia 76ers team. There is not a report of who’s in or out for the Raptors, and one isn’t required until tomorrow afternoon. They did not have a player on the injury report yesterday, but the expectation is for a couple players to be rested for “load management.”

Philadelphia has a flashy backcourt led by Tyrese Maxey. VJ Edgecombe is the hottest rookie in the NBA and Joel Embiid is still capable of putting up great numbers. The 76ers are averaging 123.3 points per game due to their great play — the most in the Eastern Conference and second most in the Association. Look for them to continue to score well and cover the -4.5 spread against a hot team. Put a unit on the earliest game today.

This season, they are 5-3 and the only team that has beat the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder – another Northwest Division team.

Tonight, the Trail Blazers travel to South Beach to take on the Miami Heat, who destroyed the Charlotte Hornets last night. They were able to rest starters late and Bam Adebayo did not play. However, an emotional game takes its toll, and the Heat played for their coach whose house burned to the ground two nights ago. Look for Portland to play aggressive and to push the Heat. They have a -2.5 point spread, but a winning margin prediction of 1-to-10 gives much better odds. Put a unit on the best bet today.
