MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks May 12

Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees – OVER 95.5 Pitch Count

One of the more intriguing matchups on paper tonight features Gerrit Cole taking on the dangerous Tampa Bay Rays offense. While it’s definitely risky to back any opposing pitcher against the Rays right now, we’re doing it with Cole. The New York Yankees ace is off to a strong start this season with a 5-0 record, 2.09 ERA, 2.61 FIP, and 1.01 WHIP through his first eight outings. At home, Cole has been especially dominant with his 0.82 ERA in five starts compared to a 4.34 ERA in three road outings. We’re banking on these favorable home splits to continue as Cole tosses six or seven strong innings while going over this pitch count prop. The Yanks’ right-hander is averaging 99.4 pitches per start this season and he’s gone over 95 pitches in four of five home outings (with 95 exactly in the other). Throwing 100 total pitches or so is nothing new for the veteran Cole, who went over 95 pitches in 14 of his last 15 home starts to end last season. Even if Cole gives up a few early runs to the Rays, the Yankees are likely better off with him in the game for as long as he can go.

Masataka Yoshida, Boston Red Sox – OVER 1.5 Total Bases

Although Masataka Yoshida’s 16-game hitting streak came to an end earlier this week, let’s bank on him getting back on track tonight. The Boston Red Sox outfielder is actually a combined 0-for-9 over the past two games, so you could say he’s due. Before these past two O-fers, Yoshida had over 1.5 total bases in 14 of the previous 16 games. That included 10 multi-hit games and 10 extra-base hits. He’s also hitting .383 with a 1.133 OPS over the past 15 contests, despite going hitless in the past two. Yoshida and the Sox will face veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright tonight. The St. Louis Cardinals starter made his first start of the season last Saturday and was shaky with four runs and eight hits allowed while facing a weaker Detroit Tigers lineup. Meanwhile, Boston is one of the toughest matchups for opposing righty pitchers and Waino could have some issues – especially since this game is at Fenway Park and not at home, where he usually has better outings.
