MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks June 1

Tanner Bibee, Cleveland Guardians – OVER 5.5 Strikeouts

We were successful with Hunter Brown’s strikeout prop yesterday in this matchup against the Minnesota Twins and we’re going right back there. The Twins are, simply put, striking out a ton against right-handed pitchers this season. Minnesota has a league-worst 26.5% K rate vs. righties in 2023 and a poor 32.7% K rate over the past two weeks vs. right-handers – that’s also dead-last in the MLB. It’s a weird situation because the Twins' offense isn’t particularly bad like, say, the Oakland Athletics. Case in point: they put up eight runs last night despite Brown punching out eight. This lineup is just striking out very often, especially against righties. As for Tanner Bibee, he’s been over 5.5 strikeouts in three of six starts this year. The Cleveland Guardians’ young righty was a strikeout pitcher in the minors and he’s shown flashes of that K upside multiple times this season.

Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels – UNDER 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI

Honestly, it feels blasphemous to take any under with Mike Trout. The risk is obvious when you’re fading arguably the greatest player of this generation. However, some key trends and stats point to Trout having a subpar day at the plate. First off, he’s only 1-for-16 with eight strikeouts in his career against Houston Astros starter Framber Valdez. This is just one of those pitchers who routinely has Trout’s number and they’ve seen each other a decent amount as AL West rivals. Valdez is rocking a 2.38 ERA and 1.04 WHIP through 11 starts so far and he threw eight innings of one-run ball against the Los Angeles Angels earlier this season. Interestingly enough, Trout is hitting .212 in Houston’s Minute Maid Park across his career. Again, that’s a big sample size with a decade’s worth of divisional road series at the Astros’ stadium. As for Trout’s numbers lately, he’s been under 1.5 combined hits+runs+RBI in five of the past 11 games. Of course, Trout has the talent to go deep in any at-bat and ruin this pick. Still, he’s shown the propensity to go 0-for-4 at times, too.
