When looking at the list of player props over at Underdog Fantasy, there was a trio of pitchers that stood out to me for today’s Major League Baseball action. Mad Max Scherzer is on the bump for New York, and he should work deep into today’s game against San Diego. Kevin Gausman will look to continue his dominance against the Red Sox, while Charlie Morton gets to face the Los Angeles Angels, a team we love to pick on. Here are my three favorite MLB player props on Underdog fantasy for July 22.

MLB Player Props Underdog Fantasy July 22

Max Scherzer OVER 18.5 Pitching Outs

I think his strikeout line is in play today, too, but I’ll lean towards the pitching outs as San Diego ranks in the bottom-third in baseball in strikeout rate in July. Since returning from injury, he’s pitched at least 6.1 innings in two of his last three outings, and the further he’s removed from the injury, the more willing the Mets will be to let their workhorse get deep into the game. The Padres rank in the bottom-third in team wOBA in the month of July, and Scherzer has a 2.45 ERA across four home starts this season. Can Scherzer get one out in the sixth inning? Considering that they let him up to 102 pitches in his last start, it seems like he’ll get every opportunity to get into the seventh.

Kevin Gausman OVER 6.0 Strikeouts

When Toronto is on the road and Gausman is pitching, I take notice. He has a 2.00 ERA on the road this season with a quality 27.1 percent strikeout rate. Furthermore, when Gausman is facing the Boston Red Sox, he has my attention twice over. In three starts against Boston this season, he has 0.43 ERA across 21 innings of work with a 27:2 K/BB ratio. He has at least eight strikeouts in each start against Boston this season, and things have really turned around for him over his last four starts, where he’s posted a 1.71 ERA and 11.14 K/9.

Charlie Morton OVER 8.0 Strikeouts

At first, this line seemed a bit high, but the more I looked at it, I was sold on the over. He’s surpassed this mark in five of his last eight starts, and the Angels have a league-worst 32.7 percent strikeout rate in the month of July. Beyond that, L.A. has the league’s worst strikeout rate against righties at 27.3 percent, and Morton’s 30.3 percent strikeout rate at home this season is six percentage points higher than his road strikeout rate in 2022.
