MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks August 11

Braxton Garrett, Miami Marlins – LOWER than 27.5 Fantasy Points

The Houston Astros have had one of the top offenses against left-handed pitching all season. They boast a .341 wOBA, 118 wRC+, .187 ISO, and .791 OPS in the split (all top-5 marks). Over the past two weeks, the Astros have dominated lefties even more with these elite numbers: .428 wOBA, 180 wRC+, .276 ISO, .325 BA, and 1.014 OPS. They also have a league-high 12.6% walk rate against southpaws in this recent stretch. Simply put, this is a nightmare matchup for left-handers right now and Braxton Garrett could be in for a rough outing. The Miami Marlins starter had a strong May and June, but he’s fallen off a bit. Garrett has a 5.35 ERA over his last seven starts since the start of July and his home/road splits are not in his favor tonight. His 5.40 ERA and 1.28 WHIP at home are a lot worse than his 2.68 ERA and 1.09 WHIP on the road. Not ideal with Houston coming to town. Garrett may also be on the shorter end of his leash if gets into trouble, as the Marlins are still in the thick of the NL Wild Card race. It’s hard to see him getting the win or quality start to boost his fantasy points, let alone have a really good outing in general. The cherry on top is that his strikeouts are also down lately with five or fewer in six of his last eight starts.

Yu Darvish, San Diego Padres – HIGHER than 34.5 Fantasy Points

Ever since the All-Star break, Yu Darvish has looked more and more like the Cy Young contender that we’re used to seeing. The San Diego Padres right-hander has a 2.55 ERA in six starts since the break, and that includes a blowup outing with seven runs allowed to Pittsburgh in July. If we ignore that ugly stat line for a second, Darvish has allowed just three earned runs combined over his five other starts this past month. Let’s bank on another strong start from him tonight in a home matchup against the Baltimore Orioles. This is actually a plus-matchup right now as the Orioles are a bottom-tier offense vs right-handed pitching lately. They have a .248 wOBA, .186 BA, and 54 wRC+ vs righties over the past week, as well as a lower 6.9% walk rate and higher 25.5% strikeout rate. Darvish should limit the baserunners tonight and have a strong chance at a quality start and/or a win. It’s also encouraging to see his xERA (3.75) and FIP (4.07) still a bit below his current 4.19 ERA, so some positive regression could still be coming.
