MLB Underdog Top Picks April 5

Dylan Cease, Chicago White Sox – OVER 7.5 Strikeouts

Coming off of an excellent 2022 season, Dylan Cease looks like he’s picking up right where he left off. Last year’s AL Cy Young runner-up had a 2.22 ERA with a 30.4% strikeout rate and 11.1 K/9 ratio. On Opening Day, the White Sox ace struck out 10 and walked none over 6.1 innings of one-run ball against a dangerous Astros lineup. It’s good to see Cease start the season on a high note after an up-and-down Spring Training. On Wednesday, Cease will face a San Franciso Giants offense that has the highest strikeout rate in the entire MLB. The Giants, though they lit up Michael Kopech two days ago, are striking out 31.6% of the time so far. San Fran’s strikeout totals over the first four games have gone as follows: 16, 13, 12, 9. Gerrit Cole punched out 11 in this matchup last week and we could see Cease crack double-digits as well.

J.T. Realmuto, Philadelphia Phillies – OVER 0.5 Singles

MLB batter vs pitcher data shouldn’t be the end-all-be-all when picking out MLB props. Sometimes, though, the numbers are too glaring to ignore. That’s the case with J.T. Realmuto today. Realmuto is hitting a whopping .647 (11-for-17) with 10 singles and one homer against New York Yankees starter Gerrit Cole. That sample size is big enough to expect the Phillies catcher to have success at the plate this afternoon and get at least one single. Yes, Cole is an elite pitcher and looked dominant on Opening Day. Still, we’re backing some favorable BvP numbers for a talented hitter. Realmuto, who’s hitting .333 this season, should also be feeling a bit refreshed for today’s game after sitting out on Tuesday.
