Paul Goldschmidt MLB Underdog Fantasy Pick: Higher Than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBI

As the New York Yankees take on the Chicago Cubs this weekend, one player prop sticks out for Saturday’s matchup. Paul Goldschmidt is in a great spot to produce, especially as one of the lone bright spots in the Yankees’ order right now. Let’s back him to do some damage against Cubs starter David Peterson. 

Goldy is crushing left-handed pitching to the tune of a .325 batting average and 1.043 OPS this season. Conversely, he’s hitting just .204 with a .588 OPS vs. righties. The Yankees’ first baseman also brings in a .292 average and .863 OPS on the road this year. If we combine those splits, he’s batting .329 with a .999 OPS on the road against southpaws. 

As for Peterson, he’s struggled to a 5.80 ERA and 1.52 WHIP this season. The left-hander has been a bit better over the past month since being traded to Chicago, but his underlying 5.17 xERA and 4.21 FIP are still subpar. Peterson is allowing a .286 batting average and .785 OPS to right-handed hitters so far. Plus, Goldschmidt is 2-for-4 with an RBI in his career against the lefty. 

 

Quinn Mathews MLB Underdog Fantasy Pick: Lower Than 4.5 Hits Allowed

The St. Louis Cardinals are calling up pitching prospect Quinn Mathews to start Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The left-hander has some upside in this matchup. Let’s count on him having a solid MLB debut this weekend, at least when it comes to hits allowed. 

Mathews posted a 3.13 ERA over 19 starts in Triple-A this year. He put up some encouraging advanced metrics as well. The southpaw had a 29.8% strikeout rate with a 48.0% groundball rate. He also allowed just a .168 batting average. 

Of course, moving to the big leagues is a step up in competition. Still, Mathews’ ability to limit the hits can play well in this spot. The Blue Jays are batting a league-worst .216 against left-handers this season. Their .284 wOBA in the split is also dead last. Since the All-Star break, Toronto is batting just .199 vs. southpaws (27th in MLB).
