We have multiple Cy Young contenders on the mound today. One of them will start for the Los Angeles Dodgers as Yoshinobu Yamamoto toes the rubber. The right-hander was sharp in his first outing of the season, allowing a pair of runs with 6 strikeouts across 6 strong innings. 

Let’s back Yamamoto to get to 7 punchouts against Cleveland on Wednesday night. The Guardians have been striking out a ton already this year. They have a 29.5% K rate over the first 6 games (third-worst in MLB), while averaging 10.8 strikeouts per contest. Plus, the lineup has a 32.0% K rate against right-handers. It’s a favorable spot for Yamamoto at home. 

The Dodgers’ ace had a 30.0% K rate at home last year, averaging 6.9 Ks per home start. Yamamoto also looked good in the spring. He had 21 strikeouts over 16.1 innings during Spring Training and the World Baseball Classic combined. That includes 7 Ks across 5 innings in his final spring outing. It seems he’s carrying that over into the regular season.

Trevor Rogers is coming off a breakout campaign with the Baltimore Orioles. The left-hander delivered a 1.81 ER and 0.90 WHIP over 18 starts in 2025, and he’s picked up right where he left off. In his first outing of this season, Rogers tossed 7 scoreless innings against the Twins. 

He recorded 5 strikeouts in that start, and there’s a good chance he surpasses that number in today’s matchup. The Rangers struggled against left-handed pitching last season, and early signs suggest that trend may continue. In their opening series against Philadelphia, the lineup faced two southpaws. Cristopher Sanchez and Jesus Luzardo racked up 10 and 7 strikeouts, respectively. 

Rogers is well-positioned to follow that blueprint. His 24.3% strikeout rate last season was his highest since 2021, while his 6.9% walk rate marked a career best. If those improvements carry over into this year, he brings real upside in the right sports. At home, Rogers averaged 6.4 strikeouts per start and posted an impressive 0.96 ERA. He’ll look to capitalize on a Rangers lineup that’s also playing a road getaway game today.
