Will Warren came into this season as a potential breakout arm for the New York Yankees, and the early signs have been promising. He’s posted a 2.70 ERA through his first two starts, including a strong 5.2 innings with 6 strikeouts at home against the Marlins in his most recent outing. Warren now gets to face a strikeout-prone Athletics offense at home. 

The A’s have struggled mightily at the plate, owning the highest strikeout rate in the league at 30.1%. That K rate climbs to 35.2% on the road, which is also the worst mark in the MLB. On top of that, they’ve managed just a .241 wOBA (30th) and .178 batting average (29th) in away games. 

All signs point to a prime spot for Warren to pile up strikeouts. He was dominant during Spring Training, posting a 1.42 ERA over 22.2 innings. That success appears to have carried into the regular season. It’s also worth noting that he recorded a 26.2% strikeout rate at home last season, compared to a 21.8% on the road. Plus, he averaged 6 Ks per home start a year ago.

Cam Smith showed some flashes last year, and now it appears he’s in full breakout mode. The Houston Astros’ outfielder is hitting .300 with a .992 OPS over the first two weeks of the season. He’s doing a little bit of everything, too. Smith has 3 home runs, 3 steals, 6 RBI, and 9 runs scored over the first 12 games. 

Let’s back Smith to stay hot in hitter-friendly Coors Field today. The Rockies will start Michael Lorenzen, who just got rocked for 9 runs on 12 hits against the Phillies last time out. The right-hander also gave up 3 runs on 7 hits in the start prior. It’s not a tough matchup for Smith to clear 1.5 combined hits, runs, and RBI. 

In fact, Smith has more than 1.5 hits+runs+RBI in 8 of his last 10 games now. He’s been a run producer in multiple ways for this Astros lineup, which could go off against Lorenzen in Coors. Smith is batting .375 with a 1.191 OPS against right-handed pitching this year. He’s much better in this split than against lefties. Lorenzen, meanwhile, has allowed a .563 BA to righty hitters so far. Last year, he gave up an .804 OPS to righties.
