MLB DFS Lineup Picks: Starting Pitchers

MLB DFS Top Pitchers

Jose Soriano (LAA)

Analysis: Soriano got off to an incredible start this season, but he has been much more hittable recently. Over his last eight starts, he owns a 5.28 ERA with a walk rate hovering near 12%. He needs to hone in the control to get back on track, which will not be easy against a Rays offense that walks at 10% versus right-handed pitching.

Ben Brown (CHC)

Analysis: Brown has been outstanding since injuries opened up a rotation spot for him. In six starts this season, he has posted a 1.44 ERA and 28.6% strikeout rate. He gets to work in an elite pitchers' park against an average offense.

MLB DFS Value Pitchers

Trevor McDonald (SF)

Analysis: McDonald has worked to a 4.15 ERA through seven starts, and the underlying data suggests he has been even better than that. Metrics like SIERA (3.28) and xFIP (3.23) both grade him as significantly better. He draws a matchup against a Cubs offense that has struggled significantly over the past month.

Griffin Jax (TB)

Analysis: Like Brown, Jax has seen significant improvements since transitioning to a starting role. He owns a 3.00 ERA through eight starts, and he draws a high-upside matchup against the Angels. The Halos have struck out at 24.9% clip against right-handed pitching, which is the highest mark in baseball.

Shane Drohan (MIL)

Analysis: Yet another reliever turned successful starting pitcher for us to consider on today's slate. Drohan has made just three starts this season, but he just turned in a quality start in Coors Field his last time out. He gets a better spot tonight at home against a Phillies offense that has produced a below-average 92 wRC+ against lefties this season.

Top Options For Strikeouts

The two top strikeout targets in today's MLB DFS projections each carry a K/9 above 9.0 and favorable opponent strikeout splits. K-prop lines and value ratings are incorporated below for DFS and prop context. These are the arms building the highest strikeout ceilings on the nine-game slate.

Our model identifies these arms as the highest-ceiling plays for Alt-K lines today:

Jose Soriano: 25.5% K% (9.6 K/9)

Ben Brown: 26.4% K% (9.2 K/9)

Griffin Jax: 22.0% K% (8.3 K/9)

Shane Drohan: 24.0% K% (8.8 K/9)

Trevor McDonald: 22.4% K% (8.5 K/9)

Best Odds For A Win

The following MLB DFS picks offer a combination of favorable win odds, sustainable ERA and xFIP metrics, and soft opponent matchups. Each carry K-prop lines worth noting alongside their DFS value at reduced ownership relative to the top tier.

MLB DFS Lineup Picks: Stacks & Hitters

MLB DFS Top Hitters

Nick Kurtz (1B, ATH) & Shea Langeliers (C, ATH)

Analysis: Each of these fellas homered last night in the hitter-friendly confines of Las Vegas Ballpark. They draw another elite spot against a lefty who has allowed a 44.1% hard-hit rate and 2.2 HR/9. Langeliers owns a ridiculous .357 ISO against lefties this season, while Kurtz has posted an also-elite .209 ISO.

Hunter Goodman (C, COL) & Willi Castro (2B/3B, COL)

Analysis: Elite hitting weather and a power-prone lefty set these two Rockies up as incredible plays tonight. Goodman owns a .225 ISO against lefties this season after posting a .273 ISO against them last year. Castro doesn't possess that elite level of power, but he should hit leadoff again and owns a .335 wOBA against lefties.

Vinnie Pasquantino (1B, KC)

Analysis: Lefties have crushed Burrows this season for a .274 ISO and .427 wOBA, and his strikeout rate is a lowly 15.3% against them. Pasquantino has posted a .166 ISO against righties this season, and he was up at an elite .230 ISO against them last year.

MLB DFS Value Hitters

Jacob Wilson (SS, ATH), Max Muncy (3B, ATH), & Henry Bolte (OF, ATH)

Analysis: The A's are again in an elite spot with hitting weather as good as could ever be hoped for. The matchup includes a lefty that has allowed a ton of power this season and a bullpen that owns the highest ERA in baseball.

Jac Caglianone (OF, KC) and Michael Massey (2B, KC)

Analysis: Burrows has a big lefty problem (.274 ISO/.427 wOBA allowed this season), and these two Royals have been on a tear lately. Massey is up to a .202 ISO against righties this season, and Caglianone owns an impressive .314 ISO against righties in June.

Cole Carrigg (OF, COL) & Kyle Karros (3B, COL)

Analysis: Estes has allowed a 5.95 ERA and nearly 1.7 HR/9 in Triple-A this season, and the underlying metrics are even worse. These two Rockies offer significant salary relief and have massive upside given the elite hitting conditions in Las Vegas tonight.

MLB DFS Top Stacks

Primary Stack: Athletics vs Kyle Freeland (COL LHP)

Why: It's 100 degrees, and the winds are blowing out at 10 mph in a minor league ballpark. Those conditions are contributing to an implied team total of nearly eight runs. The A's also draw a matchup against a lefty who has allowed over 2.2 HR/9 this season.

Primary Stack: Colorado Rockies vs Joey Estes (ATH LHP)

Why: Estes has struggled to a 5.95 ERA in 12 Triple-A starts this season, and now he has to deal with extreme hitters' weather in a minor league park tonight. The Rockies have the second-highest implied team total on the slate (6.5 runs) despite being +130 underdogs in the game.

Primary Stack: Houston Astros vs Noah Cameron (KC LHP)

Why: The Astros own an above-average 105 wRC+ against lefties this season. Cameron has posted a respectable 3.84 ERA this season, but he has also allowed plenty of loud contact. His 41% hard-hit rate and 9.2% barrel rate suggest he is prone to power.

"Contrarian" Stack: Kansas City Royals vs Mike Burrows (HOU RHP)

Why: Burrows has been smacked around for a 5.77 ERA this season and over 2.0 HR/9. Lefties have been especially hard on him, posting a .274 ISO and .427 wOBA, and Kansas City has several attractively priced lefties like Pasquantino, Massey, Cagliagnone, and Jensen.

"Contrarian" Stack: Milwaukee Brewers vs Aaron Nola (PHI RHP)

Why: Nola has been quite unlucky this season, but his struggles date back to the beginning of last season. He has posted a 5.95 ERA in that time, while allowing a hard-hit rate above 41% and more than 1.6 HR/9. Milwaukee owns an elite 113 wRC+ against right-handed pitching this season.

MLB DFS Lineups: Core MLB DFS Hitters & Pitchers

The "Chalk" (Popular)

The "Pivot" (Low

Owned)

The Winning Logic
Jax (SP, chalk)Drohan (SP, matchup)Jax hasn't thrown more than 72 pitches in an outing this season, which limits his upside a bit. Drohan draws a great matchup with a Phillies team that has struggled with lefties this season.
Las Vegas Ballpark (Chalk)KC as contrarian stackBurrows has a legitimate lefty problem, and the Royals happen to have several attractively priced lefty options.
Carigg + Karros (chalk)Massey + Cagliagnone (lower owned)These two Royals value options have been on an absolute tear lately and get a dream matchup with a lefty-prone Burrows.
