ParlayPlay Fantasy MLB Picks Today: Sunday, 8/9

Alec Burleson MLB ParlayPlay Fantasy Pick: More Than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBI

Fading Michael Lorenzen has been a profitable strategy all season, and we’re going right back to it today. The Colorado Rockies’ starter has struggled mightily, posting a 6.94 ERA and 1.85 WHIP on the season. Things haven’t improved lately, either, as he’s recorded a 7.27 ERA across his last six starts. 

Left-handed hitters have given Lorenzen plenty of trouble. The veteran is allowing a .355 batting average and 1.029 OPS in the split this season. That brings us to Alec Burleson in an appealing spot. The St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman is hitting .329 with a .967 OPS against right-handed pitching this year. The matchup and splits line up perfectly. 

Burleson is also swinging a hot bat coming out of the All-Star break. He’s hitting .355 with a .956 OPS since the break, totaling 48 combined hits, runs, and RBI across 20 games in this stretch. Plus, he’s gone 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs against Lorenzen in their previous career meetings. 

Jesus Luzardo MLB ParlayPlay Fantasy Pick: Less Than 5.5 Hits Allowed

The Philadelphia Phillies will start Jesus Luzardo on Sunday, and he’s in an excellent spot against the Toronto Blue Jays. The lineup has struggled significantly against left-handed pitching, which bodes well for Philly’s southpaw to limit the damage at home. 

Toronto owns a .216 batting average and .282 wOBA against left-handers this year, with both marks ranking dead last in the MLB. Since the All-Star break, the Blue Jays are hitting just .206 with a .257 wOBA against southpaws. Both are bottom-tier numbers across the league during this stretch as well. 

Luzardo, meanwhile, has been outstanding over the last two months. He’s posted a 1.98 ERA and 0.97 WHIP over his last 10 starts. In this stretch, the lefty has recorded a strong 33.1% strikeout rate and limited opponents to a .175 batting average. He’s also allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last eight home starts. 

To top things off, Luzardo already showed he can handle this matchup. He held Toronto to just one run on four hits when he faced the offense in June. With the Jays struggling against lefties and Luzardo pitching at a high level right now, it sets up well for the Phillies’ starter to deliver.
