I remember my first year playing fantasy football, when drafting running backs with your first two picks was the norm. Nowadays, people look at you with confusion because you failed to grab a true elite wide receiver. There is no doubt that the passing game is beginning to take over the league, and we can see it with how few legitimate workhorse running backs there are in the National Football League. Anyways, let’s take a look at this week’s Top 5 Wide Receivers. This one might seem a little obvious, but sometimes the simplest of answers is actually the correct one.
Antonio Brown @ WSH
The best receiver in the league with a likely high-scoring shootout on hand? Sign me up. He is Mr. Consistency with a bunch of upside on a weekly basis, regardless of matchup.
Julio Jones vs. TB
Ignore the minor ankle tweak, he is fine. Matt Ryan loves going to Jones, and a take a look here at his target totals against the Bucs the last four times the two have met; 17, 13, 11 and 11. He is an elite wide receiver who should put up big numbers in the season opener.
DeAndre Hopkins, vs. CHI
Hopkins just might have the best matchup in all of football in Week 1. Chicago has three members of their secondary that are questionable for this matchup. He will get plenty of attention from quarterback Brock Osweiler, so you can lock him in as a Top 5 wide receiver this week.
Allen Robinson vs. GB
Robinson is Bortles’ favorite target and Jacksonville will need to get the job done through the air if they want to keep up with a potent Green Bay offense. He led the league last season in targets inside the 10-yard line and it would be preposterous if inside the end zone Robinson wasn’t the first read every play.
Sammy Watkins @ BAL
Watkins caught a touchdown once every 10.7 targets last season, while the Baltimore defense allowed a touchdown once every 13 targets to receivers. Yes, Baltimore’s secondary is healthier, but they are still exploitable. Expect Watkins to break one or two big ones on Sunday.
