Part of excelling in the daily fantasy game is paying attention to trends. At the pitcher position, there are plenty of big names to choose from, but in a week like this where the bats of the Nationals and Cubs are playing in Colorado, it’s nearly impossible to afford the top arms. Fantasy averages can also be deceiving and not necessarily tell the whole story when it comes to pitchers. Therefore, we need to dig deeper and find some hurlers who are getting the job done under the radar and under the elite level salary level that will allow us to spend on offense.
1) Tom Koehler MIA
If I told you Tom Koehler had the second-best ERA in baseball over the last 30 days, you’d say that I was telling lies. But Koehler’s dazzling 1.35 mark is stone cold truth. This run has led to a 3-0 record over that span with a .76 WHIP and a 28 K/7 BB ratio. He’s also given up just 18 hits in 33 innings. Koehler will continue to be around $7,500 on FanDuel and is performing like a $9K pitcher right now making him GPP gold!
2) Kyle Hendricks CHC
He was never seen as a strikeout pitcher, but Kyle Hendricks has certainly shaken off that negative perception in 2016. He actually has 35 K’s in his last 35 innings with just six walks and an ERA of 1.53. You know Hendricks will get plenty of run support from the Chicago offense. His salary hasn’t been cheap ($9.6 K on FanDuel), but in cash games on nights where big time double digit salary aces are in play, Hendricks is a wise slight fade down the leader board.
3) Ervin Santana MIN
Talk about negative perception! Well in all fairness, the Twins have dug their own grave in that department. However, Ervin Santana over the last 30 days hasn’t fallen prey to the dog days of summer. In fact, he’s pitched his best baseball of the year over the last 5 starts sporting a 1.53 ERA with a .96 WHIP and three runs to show for it! His ownership percentage will be incredibly low based on the overall stigma attached to the Twins. But, that makes his a very cheap secondary pitcher on DraftKings in tournaments. One player’s ignorance is another player’s opportunity. Be the latter!
4) Dylan Bundy BAL
Once upon a time Dylan Bundy was the No. 1 overall prospect in baseball. Unfortunately, we all know injuries derailed that train. However, Bundy has gotten a second life in the rotation and battled back into fantasy relevance. In his last five starts he’s struck out 32 batters in 29 innings with a 1.84 ERA. He’s also 401 over that span making his $7.5K salary on FanDuel feel like stealing money. Bundy will of course be on a pitch count, but even so, it’s hard not to want shares of him while he’s this hot.
5) Jameson Taillon PIT
There were few more heralded rookies this offseason than Jameson Taillon who finally got the call this summer only to end up on the DL shortly after. Well, he’s back and throwing bullets right now over his last 6 games. His 31K /6 BB ration, 2.37 ERA and .97 WHIP over that time have really flown under the radar. Let this be your official notice that Taillon is dealing right now and you need to get on board ASAP! He’s a great value on all sites and should remain so well into September. The future is now!
