Giants vs. Nationals Prediction: Sunday, April 19th
Let’s lead off our MLB best bets today with a potentially high-scoring game between National League foes. We have Robbie Ray on the mound for the San Francisco Giants, while Miles Mikolas starts for the Washington Nationals. We can fade both pitchers, for different reasons, as we target the over.
Robbie Ray owns a 2.42 ERA and 1.03 WHIP over his first four starts this season. However, the Giants’ left-hander profiles as a prime negative regression candidate. His 4.46 xERA and 4.69 FIP suggest some worse outings moving forward. Plus, his .180 BABIP and 97.7% left-on-base rate are unsustainable.
Those underlying metrics could come back to bite Ray in today’s matchup. The Nationals are crushing left-handed pitching this year. They have a .384 wOBA (1st in MLB), 142 wRC+ (1st), .305 batting average (first), and .857 OPS (second) in the split. The only offense better or on par against lefties has been the Dodgers.
It’s worth fading Ray in this spot on the road. He’s off to a hot start, but some shakier outings are likely coming. Notably, his 14.8% barrel rate ranks in the 12th percentile among MLB pitchers, and his 11.4% walk rate is in the 34th percentile. Plus, the veteran had a 4.37 FIP on the road last year.
Meanwhile, the Giants should get to Miles Mikolas as well. The Washington starter has an ugly 11.49 ERA and 2.17 WHIP through four appearances this season. Most of that damage came against the Dodgers earlier this month, when he allowed 11 runs. Even so, Mikolas has given up five runs over 6.1 innings in his last two outings. The Nats have used him behind an opener twice, but that hasn’t helped much.
Admittedly, the San Francisco offense has underperformed this year. The Giants are also struggling against right-handers, with a .284 wOBA and 78 wRC+ in the split. The lineup has woken up lately, though, with 10 and seven runs scored in the first two games of this series. Plus, the Nationals’ bullpen has a league-worst 6.38 FIP this year.

Padres vs. Angels Prediction: Sunday, April 19th
The San Diego Padres are rolling lately, winning nine of their last 10 games as one of the hottest teams in the league. They’re also 13-3 since the beginning of April. It’s obviously risky fading them right now, but it also provides value on the Los Angeles Angels to get the victory on Sunday.
We have an intriguing pitching matchup on tap today. Michael King starts for San Diego, while Reid Detmers toes the rubber for Los Angeles. There are some underlying metrics for both guys pointing us towards the Angels.
Michael King is off to a strong start to the season with a 2.78 ERA through 4 outings. However, some advanced metrics suggest negative regression for the Padres’ right-hander. His 4.56 xERA and 4.51 xFIP are notably higher. Plus, King’s 11.9% barrel rate (23rd MLB percentile) and career-low 2.0 K/BB ratio are concerning.
While King has been effective thus far, the Angels present a tough matchup today. The offense is crushing right-handed pitching lately. Over the past week, Los Angeles has posted a league-leading .418 wOBA vs. righties. The Angels also have a .359 wOBA (3rd in MLB) and 129 wRC+ (second) in the split over the past two weeks.
After being held to only one run in last night’s loss, the Angels’ bats can wake back up against King here. The offense is still averaging seven runs per game over the past nine contests. It also helps that Los Angeles will get back Jorge Soler from suspension ahead of Sunday’s game. Furthermore, King had a 3.71 ERA and 6.69 FIP on the road last year.
Meanwhile, Reid Detmers is coming off an excellent outing against the Yankees and can carry that over into today’s start. He allowed just one run with nine strikeouts across seven strong innings in the win over New York. The left-hander’s current 3.57 ERA isn’t great, but the advanced metrics point to positive regression.
Detmers boasts a 2.49 FIP and 2.53 xERA after his first four starts. He’s generating a 38.7% chase rate, which is the 95th MLB percentile, and owns a dominant 4.33 K/BB ratio. The arrow is clearly pointing up for the Angels’ starter.
Today, Detmers will face a Padres lineup that’s struggled a bit against left-handed pitching. In the split this season, San Diego has a .286 wOBA (22nd in MLB) and 81 wRC+ (20th). The offense has been better against right-handers recently, but lefties can give it trouble. Let’s count on Detmers doing that at home, where he put up a 3.11 FIP last year.
